Random Gumtree find - Sat nav display

Hi,

I don't know if this is allowed, it isn't mine but thought someone might be interested. If this isn't allowed please delete but I know these are expensive and so would like to just highlight it.
 
Am I missing something? Haven't fixed satnavs had their day with the advent of so many navigation apps on smartphones etc? Honest question, I've never had a car with fixed satnav installed, what can it do that a smartphone app can't?

I have built in navigation in all my cars. The Z4 has a custom fit job with an Android tablet... but with every other car, I use Waze on Android instead.

That said - anyone who is seeking a spare / replacement screen may find this useful as they are quite hard to come by these days.

People like the integration. A s a result modern systems do so much more, link to facebook read out texts, use google etc. Can't see the point of most of it myself, but would always want an integrated system in a decent car.
 
+1. E89 integrated system controls hard disk music, service schedule, faults and warning etc. A smart app wont tell me that I have 3000 mikes left on my rear pads.

I've tried all 3 possibilities i.e. standalone Tom Tom, phone app and now inbuilt sat nav. Got to say I prefer the inbuilt becasue you can jump out of the car and not have to faff about hiding other arrangements from the light fingered amongst us. I also have to say mine is voice controlled and is brilliant at reading my voice and destination commands and therefore requires no screen pushing whatsoever.

If you'd asked me 4 months ago I would have said Tom Tom hands down but now inbuilt would be my preference. BTW I also have a much larger display and to PIO's are exceptional!
 
my aim was to just point it out as I know the motors can go or that people might retrofit them.
They are great if you want to use an intravee.... allows so much that an aftermarket can't do. But the discussion was merely incase someone needed one. I seemed to remember that they were more than this to source.

But checking them will, which costs you nothing at all.

All these gadgets are geared to people who are too lazy to sort stuff out themselves.

Do you need something to tell you that you have a bulb out or low discs/pads? You should be able to figure that out yourself.
 
Yes, when I look at the cost of an installed system vs an app, It just doesn't make sense to me.

+1 Agreed its a faff with TomTom. Although I havent been disappointed with the intergrated units performance, I still think there should be a nice way of upgrading the screen....Resolution...

Any ideas if you can do this?

Tbh I think we are responding more to geezah.

You are correct though that more is required to retrofit.

Nav radio
Nav loom
MkIV dvd drive
The screen
GPS antenna

Around £600 if you can find the parts. Myself and others have done it in the past. I would do it again, but would use the casing and android tablet though as some of the parts especially the loom are very hard to obtain.

I disagree. Admittedly the graphics are basic at best, but the route calculation speed is lightning fast, substantially faster than the setup in my S-Max which is somewhat newer. The only downside is no full postcode search unless you obtain a database and integrate it into the map data yourself.

I have to say the traffic system did a great job of getting my back from Silverstone last year due ot the closure of the M25 :thumbsup:

Yep, now I've got the twin tuner head unit (warranty replacement) it's been ace.
 
The sat nav system in the e85/86 is well over 12 years old technology, so I never understand when people moan about it. Try comparing yourself to younger you from a decade ago :)

I've got built-in SatNav in 2 of our 4 cars (M5 and Mini Cooper S - both very similar to the E85/E86 system), but I always use my TomTom 1005 when I'm going anywhere.

The interface is so much easier to use. I have the latest pocketgpsworld speed camera database on it. I have a large number of personal POIs (built up over many years) on it. I always have the latest maps (thanks to MapShare and TomTom's "free maps for life"). I have really good live traffic information, and automatic re-routing around slow areas. I can use it in any car (including hire cars when on holiday).

A small price to pay for having to lock it away at the end of the journey.
