Rain Sensor Inc Automatic Headlights feature

Hi - me again!

Right my car has a rain sensor as it has auto headlights - but how do i test it? Im not even sure how to activate them...does the stalk need to be in position one?

Move the stalk up one position and leave it there. Once it rains it will sort itself out and wipe intermittently or as fast as it needs to to clear the screen.

Spray some water on the screen in the area of the back of the mirror and the sensor will detect drops and if you have the ignition on and wiper in the correct switch will operate.
 
It seems to be with my automatic wipers that they need a push of the "sensitivity button" up in order to get them started once it starts raining but then for the entire journey through rain, non-rain they'll work and then its back to the start again after ignition off. I do remember reading that someone else had this as well. The windscreen can be soaking and still not start the wipers first off.

Mines the same as this...
 
You could be right guys - I've never touched the sensitivity button, but do recall sometimes the need to switch the wipers on another notch and back off to the auto which is probably doing the same thing.
 
Yes, they need activating each time (once during the car trip). I usually use the wheel to turn up and down to get that done. Some on the X5.
 
There is a sensible reason for this. If your screen gets covered in ice and the wipers did a sweep as soon as the car was started you can guess what happens, hence the manual intervention required.
 
You don't have to go that far either, if my screen is covered in flies the last thing I want is the wipers to go on with two spots of rain on it :)

Yep need to do one or the other. On the SLK they're always on, meaning you need to remember to turn them off if there is something on the screen, the BMW way is better for sure.
