Railings and gates...

Thought I'd ask..

Do we have anyone that does this for a living on the forum? I ask as need around 23m of railings and a single gate, along with large double gates to rear of our house.

Have phoned loads of places, and they just either keep reappointing, or just don't turn up. I don't know what it is with tradespeople these days, I appreciate they may be busy but I do explain that I'm happy to wait for the right job to be done, and however busy you are, you still need a flow of incoming work. Trust me, I spent 10yrs as a self-employed kitchen fitter..

So if anyone does this, or can recommend a company they have used...

I am in St Helens, Merseyside BTW..

Mike

Try A & S McKay , Birkenhead . 0151 6528082 , www.asmackay.co.uk
They aren't exactly local to you but they've never let me down with bits and pieces , just a word of warning though , don't expect a fancy office reception area , very much a belt and braces company .

eh? :?

metaphorical belt & braces, real gates & railings!
Rob

nope, still don't get it:
belt and braces: the use of two or more actions in order to be extra careful about something

Probably more a north eastern phrase , no salesmen , your dealing direct with the guy who will be welding the gates together

ah, one of those northern phrases that make no sense - thanks :)

Sounds like you're digging a hole and defending a simple wrong use of an expression as belt and braces only has one meaning and as illustrated by Marlon

No bells and whistles would be more appropriate.

Anyway back to railings and gates :)

I didn't make it up , regional differences , get yourself up to Newcastle , there will be any number of other Geordies in the big market who will gladly argue with you about it
With reference to the gates , you'll need to speak to Billy at the fabricators .

No probs , he's a decent guy , I don't even bother asking for prices these days but obviously you need to , I'm off to join marlon and jeeper on Shakespeare.com

Well, had 2 quotes so far.. 29m of std 1000mm high railing to front and one side of house, along with a std gate, plus 2000mm high double gates to the rear, 5m wide, galvanised and powdercoated.. Prices quote, WITHOUT automation, so add around £1k to these..

1st price - for cash, no VAT £3,650

I had to sit down...

2nd price - inc VAT, which I can get back £7,450

I literally fell down..

I think I'm going to have to do these myself, I have a TIG, MIG, Plasma cutter, pillar drill and a 350mm cutoff saw.. All I need is a bench, and some time, which I don't have a lot of, but as I said to the Wife, it's still cheaper to pay extra staff wages and be in the garage making the things...

Blimey! Sounds like you need to find yourself a local one man band fabricator and do a deal, you know the sort, a 'spit & sawdust' type setup without any of your 'bells & whistles' . Who knows the guy might even wear a belt AND braces! If you ever find him of course.
