Radio thrown its teddy out of the cot!!

Evening chaps

As the title says, the radio in my 2011 23i has decided it doesnt want to tune to any stations.

Was fine yesterday and when I switched the radio on today I just got a load of static and intermittant reception.

I cleared all the presets but it will now not auto tune.

Manual tuning also finds no stations.

I am suspecting there is an antenna issue but I can only see about 6 inches of it between the rear bumper and exhaust. It looks ok.

I have also replaced the stubby with the original whip....still no joy.

Even a 20 min battery disconnect and an idrive reset didnt help.

Is there a specific fuse for the radio or amp? What number is it and is it in the fuse box under the passenger side?

Its the basic stereo system so not sure that there is an amp.

I have read some previous posts but no help there.

Your help will be very much appreciated as I can only listen to so much Katy Perry before I lose the will to live....... :cry:

I have dug a little deaper into my reception issues

Removed the radio unit and checked the antenna connection

Also checked every radio fuse above the passenger footwell

Everything looks ok

I'm leaning towards maybe an earth problem or break in the antenna along the bumper

I can just about manually tune to classic fm if a friend holds the whippy

Still no auto tune though

Come on fellas, where are all the audio experts hiding?

As I understand it, on the E89 there are two aerial circuits one for top down and top up, you could try to see if there are any changes top up and top down?

Just been out and tried it with the top down but no change

Still only able to manually tune to one station

Hmmmhhh.. sounds like the RF isn't getting through...as you say cable/connector on the aerial..failing that RF circuit internally gone phut..

Tricky without a second head unit to do an A-B swap..

I have to pass at this stage.. :|
 
Thanks for the input anyway.

Had the oil changed with the cabin filter at main stealer on Friday

Could they have dislodged something near the fuse box maybe when fitting a new filter. ?

I couldnt see anything when I checked the fuses myself

I did go back to them and said the radio was working when it went in but isn't now

Just got the usual "it's a coincidence"

Of course I cannot prove the radio was OK before they had it.
 
Well bless my cotton socks...I think there is a very strong probability that this was in part at least an interaction..

I would press hard for a rebate when you get them to look at it, which I suspect is your primary way of solving this issue..unless you have a sparky that is savvy with automotive modern stuff..its fiendishly complicated these days...
 
You could remove the head unit, attache a cheap stick aerial, cheap speaker and a 12v line. If it works then the snags in the car, if not the head unit is dead. Or if someone is near you maybe they could volunteer a quick head unit swap in the car to help you. Whats your location?
