Radio switchoff

Have looked in the handbook but cannot find why my radio switches itself off every half hour or so. It just means I have to turn it back on again, but I would like to know why this is happening.

Mine radio has always done this, which is a nuisance when you are out cleaning the car. The radio only does the auto switch off with no key in the ignition. I thought it was programmed like that to save the battery should you walk away and forget to switch the radio off.

That's correct. I assumed the OP meant when they were driving along. If when parked then situation normal.

Did you not try putting the key in?

To the OP - Auto off is pretty common to all cars with acc off/key out, some have an interval you can select. So if parked and with key out, it's normal

No this is whilst driving I had to switch it back on 3 times yesterday on a non stop 100 mile journey, its just frustrating.

Sounds very annoying. My guess would be one of the live feeds to the radio is knackered and the radio thinks it's running without the ignition being on?

I suspect the timeout that powers off the audio systems in the Z4 may be flakey. I have a USB player that annoyingly loses position when it's powered off. Usually this happens if I leave the car switched off for about 30 minutes, but occasionally it will resume playing where it left off after a much longer period. It sounds like goon has the opposite problem.
