Radar Detectors

Yes I’ve been down this route several times and my conclusion is that they are a total waste of money and by the time they have detected a speed camera it’s tool late. The other issue is loads of false readings. I wouldn’t waste your money on them!

As a licenced radio ham (GM6-FTE) we get kind of anal about these things..

Well hello there. KG4OUE here!

Are radio hams still popular in todays internet connected world?

Well the conjunction of digital technologies and advances in software means there are some very innovative techniques ...it’s a whole new world beyond the morse key !

But by the same token even good old Single Side Band still has a place. If you all recall the insanity that was that "storm area 51" event last year... I was there, but as part of ARES to provide emergency comms if anything did happen (spoiler alert: it did not). It was a VERY interesting event to attend from that angle, though.

The most exciting things that happened involved a cow being hit by a car, and a guy being arrested for indecent exposure because he decided it was a great idea to pee on the perimeter fence to, I guess, show his rejection of authority... or something.

In the Uk I thought radar detectors were legal but once they detect a signal it’s too late as you can’t react quick enough.

I’d be interested in getting one otherwise.

Jammers are illegal to use to block speed camera signals

They are very illegal here. Had to remove the one fitted to my car (which was there when I bought it :D )
To be accurate...
Radar and laser detectors are legal to own and use in the UK - Radar and laser jammers are not

To be pedantic it is illegal, although taking a case trhough the courts may be vexed!

Unauthorised reception
There are two criminal offences, under section 48 of the Wireless Telegraphy Act 2006,
relating to unauthorised reception.
Offence 1
It is an offence if a person "otherwise than under the authority of a designated person:
…. uses wireless telegraphy apparatus with intent to obtain information as to the contents,
sender or addressee of any message whether sent by means of wireless telegraphy or not,
of which neither the person using the apparatus nor a person on whose behalf he is acting is
an intended recipient."
This means that it is illegal to listen to anything other than general reception transmissions
unless you are either a licensed user of the frequencies in question or have been specifically
authorised to do so by a designated person.
A designated person means:
1. the Secretary of State;
2. the Commissioners of Customs and Excise; or
3. any other person designated for the purpose by regulations made by the Secretary of
State.
Good lord, is it that time already..........
