Racing puma

Have mentioned on here before how good my FRP of 5 years really was, it recently has come up for sale again, for those of you that don't know what they are, here's my old one on eBay at over 11 years old:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FORD-RACING-PUMA-1-7-16V-BLUE-/160712212294?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item256b31bf46#ht_720wt_922

Haven't driven one, but wouldn't rush out to spend over £5k on an 11 year old Ford.

Were they really that good? :?

I ordered a Puma when they were launched, absolutely fantastic car to drive, I would say the 2nd best ford ever built and still desirable hence the price. Cannot think of another car, which was launched 15 years ago that still looks fairly modern.

Yep! Future classic, good ones won't drop any more money now. There's a register of where they all are on pumapeople with 284 of them accounted for.

Hand built car by Tickford with a production run of 500 each with a properly stamped inlet manifold derived from the S1600 rally puma.

Our Puma was immense. Have said before on here, for pounds spent compared to smiles while driving it's still the best car I've had. The Z4 is obviously a better car, but so it should be when it cost us over 10x the amount we paid for the Puma. I had an absolute wail of a time in the Puma even on our boring everyday commute we used to do into Cambridge.

Always fancied a shot in the drivers seat of an FRP. The 1.7 was pretty nippy, but you can always do with more power! The handling was great and I'm assuming the FRP refined that even further.

The bad news is that the parts are pretty slim are they not? The number of replacement front wings or was it front bumpers available were down to single figures as all the original Ford stockpile was almost empty.

Here's my story about limited edition Fords! Crashed my Mk3 Escort RS1600i (built for Group A Homologation) on Christmas Eve 1984 with 1200 miles on the clock and 3 months old. B*gger :(

Went to purchase one a while back but it was tatty....definite classic.......I drove the standard one for 2 weeks when it came out ( mates whilst he was on holiday )....and that was awsome.......racing one is the car the puma should always have been....

If I was swapping the z this would REALLY interest me :D

Did they not have the brakes off an Escort Van? Or was that on the 1.4?

Racing puma's had a rear disc conversion from a 2.0 focus and the fronts were an Alcon 4 pot set up (think they were used on porches as well) but with no dirt seales. They can pul 1.1G in the puma. Along with the brakes, they had a wider track, eibach coil overs, full janspeed exhaust (which popped and bangs like crazy on over run) more aggressive cams with advanced timing, rev limiter raised to 7250rpm, shot penned gearbox with the ratios from the 1.4 puma and an S1600 based inlet manifold.

Officially 0-62 was done in 7.9 but I am confident mine was more like 7 dead - I read somewhere that if a manufacturer advertises performance as quicker than they are they can get in a bit of bother, with them all being hand finished, I think Ford took the conservative approach.

Interior saw Sparco seats as standard and a full retrim in the bright blue Alcantara.

It was without doubt the best handling car I have driven - my mum has had a standard 1.7 since new in 2000 and there is NO comparison between the FRP and standard car

I WILL own one again one day! :driving:

That's nice that! I nearly bought one back in '99, but then went for an MX-5 10th Anniversary. Girlfriend a few years later bought a standard Puma 1.7 and that was brilliant fun.

You've got me looking at them now at that price! lol
