Hi all,
Myself and a couple mechanic buddies have been hatching a plan to convert my 2.2l E85 2003 Z4 into a track car.
I hope if it ends up happening i will be able to document it all and share it here - but I wanted to start with an outline of my plan in case anyone here has attempted any of the modifications and can potentially forewarn me of any issues. I would be eternally grateful as there is a chance many thousands of pounds will be on the line to achieve this!
The aim is to engine swap the car to a 3.0l m54 engine (cheaper and easier than swapping mine for a 3.0l model) and then attach a turbo to it (with all of the necessary mods to achieve this). We are thinking we can get on the order of 450-500hp out of the engine without needing forged internals.
To manage the additional power we would put in the back end of a BMW M3. Which also gives us an LSD which from what I have read, should be a simple swap and just needs bolting in. So long as the 5speed gearbox is swapped to a 6speed one.
After the drivetrain has been done the upgrades for suspension and brakes should be relatively simple.
Hopefully this shouldn't be too painful to do thanks to the similarities between the z4 and m3 subframes. There is a chance it may not need any fabrication at all.
At first estimate I think it will end up being about £6000 start to finish!
Wish me luck!!!
