Quick vent/Rant... Why do people do it??

Just need to vent somewhere other than social media lol...

Having found out that one of my staff, who up until yesterday I trusted implicitly throughout the two years she has worked for me, has been up to no good..

Found out that she has been selling counterfeit/imported tobacco OVER MY COUNTER to MY CUSTOMERS....

Have the evidence on CCTV of her taking the money and putting it into her bag before taking out a pouch and passing it to the customer...

Police and trading standards informed, as I can't have anyone thinking I knew about, condoned or was any way involved but to say I am wound up about it is an understatement..

Beggars belief that for the sake of a few £, she was willing to risk a part time job where her wages are £840 a month...

Plus I've worked out from sales figures that my rolling tobacco sales are down about 40% since mid-Oct last year, a loss of about £970 in takings, which is "only" about £70 in profit, BUT that money should have been going into my till and not her pocket...

So when she arrives for her shift tomorrow, well she won't be working it..

Rant/vent over lol..

Unfortunately there is often no reasonable explanation for the behaviour of an increasingly large number of people across modern society. Take a look in any local UK newspaper or website news section and it's full of stories of people who naively think they'll continually get away with crime in the workplace, no matter how sloppily they carry it out!

She can't be the most intelligent person anyway, if she's been doing it in view of your CCTV, or was that a covert installation?

No, we have 12 cameras in the shop that also record 2 channels of sound. The staff know this and also that sound is recorded for their own protection on the event of a dispute.

The mind boggles..

Crazy why would she bother!!

I am sure she will be regretting it tomorrow.

That's it - I worked out that "if" she was making £3 on a pack, then over my "lost" sales, she's made about £220 over 3 months... Hardly worth losing your job over and facing a possible prosecution.

Its things like this that close places down and put people out of jobs.
An older guy I worked with years ago told me about the car plants near Glasgow and how you could go into any pub in Clydebank and get parts you needed for your car for peanuts compared to the shop prices.
The workers at these plants were taking the stuff out the back door and selling it and sticking the money in their pockets.
Then they wonder why they are out of a job when the company goes bust.

Be wary, she may have a plan in mind to blame you, especially when it comes to proving the point all she has to do is make a complaint and say the fake baccy came from you, sneaky a"holes usually have something going on

That's why I'm glad the video clearly shows her taking it from her own handbag, and not from under the counter or her having to go into the back for it. And this is also the reason I had the plod/trading standards involved straight away.

Obviously my "confrontation" tomorrow with her will also be recorded, so hoping she 'fesses up and says something like "it was only the once" in order to save her job, although it'll be futile as the trust has gone and I know it was more than "just the once"

Can't decide which I'm more astounded by - that you have 12 cameras! or that she thought she'd get away without being filmed! Hope it goes the way you want tomorrow Mike.

Well it won't go her way! TBH, to be fair, 6 of those cameras are outside the shop front and rear.

I am expecting her to be quite brazen about it, as she's no shrinking violet. But I don't give second chances to people who I routinely leave in a shop with £15-£20k of stock in it, stock that I've paid for myself, so go she must..

Mike

At least the last girl I had to sack was "only" stealing chocolate and crisps, about £10 worth a shift, which she sat eating in the stock room :o

In that case then Mike - Facebook Live the event!!

Don't tempt me - [ref]Marlon[/ref] would have a hell of a job blurring faces "in order to protect identities"

It sounds like you've done all the right things and I hope it does not cause you too much more grief from here on in. I once heard a lecture on fraud in the work place and from memory I think that the guy said that up to 60% of people will succumb to temptation at some point (with 20% being down right dishonest from day 1) which is why businesses need to have good controls in place. She hasn't been turning the camera's off has she?

The staff can't, the controls are password protected and the unit itself is in a locked box with a UPS. plus if the plug is pulled and it goes over to the UPS, then as it's also connected to the network I get an email telling me so.

Gread and opportunity....it makes some people do stupid things. I worked in a bank branch for 10 years and people often asked if I was tempted and I always replied that the branch didn’t hold enough money for me to even consider it.

A young girl did steal £500 once and they caught her, prosecuted etc.

But I really can’t understand it myself, as the relatively small gain she has made is vastly outweighed by the consequences.

She deserves all that’s coming to her. Not just for ripping you off but also those fake fags are often full of even worse things than conventional ones, containing asbestos, rat droppings and faeces.
