Quick Roof Question.

Hi,

Going to view a car tomorrow, spoken to the owner who says the roof has stop working. I asked him to explain in more detail he said "I took it out for a spin tried the button and the roof didn't lower and there are no lights showing when it's pressed"

Surely this is an electrical fault maybe as simple as the fuse if the light isn't working?

If it was only a fuse ,i imagine most sellers would have replaced it before showing the car :?

I wouldn't buy it assuming its a fuse, fear the worst & price accordingly!

Yup of-course.

I know it's a very common issue but suppose I just thought with the button not lighting up that surely wouldn't be linked to the motor water damage?

Hi

Having purchased a zed 3.0 with some issues, i wish i asked for a bigger discount or walked away. i love my car, but i am paying for it now. Unless you know its a fuse or a simple fix discount as others have said or walk away.

Zeds are not to bad to fix, but the roof is like my wife.....Expensive :headbang:

Good advise from all, my Z4 goes in next Wed for roof problems and I am not counting on good news. Get the seller to have it fixed before buying.
"Let the buyer beware"

Ok so I'm looking at around £800 to fix this at a garage?

How much is a motor roughly? I've looked on ebay and normal sale sites they seem quite rare?

You can get it done for around £600, depends upon your area/how far you want to travel. Circa £350 for just the motor, labour's the real variable.

There are 3 fuses associated with the roof, they are in positions 12, 31 and 55 in the fuse box behind the glove box.
However it is very unlikely that these are the problem.

I had my roof motor replaced a couple of months ago at Grosvenor Motors in Reading. They have done many and even have a page devoted to the subject on their website. They took around 4 hours to replace mine at a fixed price of around £650.00.

But in concert with other advice, don't touch the deal unless you have a hefty discount to do the fix - I negotiated a grand off the asking price when I bought my car last November - this was to cover the roof motor, 2 tyres and refurbing the style 108 alloys - and I can tell you even that wasn't enough!!!

To take a risk when buying a car is really just not worth it, keep looking there are some good ones out there.........

The light not working could mean a loose connection or a bad fuse - both of which are quick and easy to check, so I would ask for it to be investigated and sorted if you like the car. Strangely, mine didn't respond in this manner a couple of days ago, but switching the car off and back on cured it. On mine it may be related to a loose connection with an aftermarket remote roof module that has been fitted - sometimes the scotch clips loosen a bit. Worth asking if he has a Gaptech or reinhold module fitted to allow remote and one-touch hood operation.

Cost me a little over £700 for the replacement motor and labour on my last car at an independent. A dealer will rape your wallet, and then probably you, for the labour to do the work. It is very important you use an Indy that has done Z4 roofs before, preferably a BMW specialist. Seen a few threads on here recently about people getting roofs fixed and then issues cropping up... IIRC related to non-specialist garages. If it turns out the roof motor is gone, walk away or get £800 off the price as said above.

Bing is absolutely spot on .........Be VERY careful - I had the motor replaced by a jaguar dealer (who I bought the car from) only to find that it was a crap job which has just resulted in a £1500 repair bill 10 months after they fucked it up !!!!!!!!!!!! Needles to say even though the car is out of warranty I am in talks with Jaguar. Who have offered £600 towards the repair.... We are currently "in talks" so no resolution as yet but hopefully they will offer a little more.........

Get the seller to have it checked with a detailed report from a BMW Indy - otherwise walk away !!!
