Quick Question About My Throttle Body

Just a quick question about this throttle body. Is there supposed to be a slight gap at the sides of the flap as shown here.

Not sure about that, You always want a little air getting past the butterfly valve to enable the engine to run, can’t think why it would need to be hermetically sealed? :?

Yes, you need the gap to idle. When dirt and oil build up in the gap, clean with a soft cloth and solvent.
 
Aaaaah! thanks for that both, i just wanted to know before i fit it as it's not brand new and if it wasn't right i would have returned it.

If it's anything like the N52, the throttle body is rarely closed at all. The throttle body is only closed when the computer determines that a critical error has occurred or is at standstill. The valvetronic system uses the valves to control the airflow exclusively. I don't know if anyone's done it on the N46 but people have deleted the throttle body on the N52 (for off road use only as far as I know as it's a failsafe against a runaway engine). When it slams shut that gap isn't going to provide enough air for the engine to continue running.
