Out of interest, what is the benefit of remote start? I don't think we have it here in the UK either.

Benefit of remote start is simply convenience of cooling or heating the car before you get into it. I believe the BMW's remote start will keep the engine running for about 15 minutes, which is typical of every other car's such feature in the USA. We enjoyed the remote start a few months ago when we had to park outside in very cold temperatures for about 3 months while our daughter was in the hospital; it was a real blessing! She is doing much better now BTW. Remote start is a luxury, and in no way needed, but we really want it on at least one of our cars. Every car but our BMWs (until the Zed) had it, so we would have missed it if it were not available. We are the typical spoiled American drivers.

Remote start is not permitted in the EU (and I presume still in Britain).

Bummer, that. :( I sure enjoy my remote start in this hot, muggy Memphis summer days.

We have remote ventillation as an option here, this takes out some of the heat.
The 5series and up also have remote heating/defrosting i think, without having to start the engine

Yeah, we had that option also on the pre-Zed 4 BMWs, and I think on our Mercs also. However, without the engine being started, air conditioning and running the heater could not be active, so all it did was circulate the car's interior air. Marginally effective. I don't use the remote start all that often to heat or cool my car since I am retired and my car resides in my garage resting quietly most of the time. However, should the need arise it is a comfort to be able to have the interior cooled or heated.

Hard to go back, to not having an option once you have gotten used to it.
