QUESTIONS ON BUYING MY FIRST Z4!!

Hi I'm new to this forum and hopefully will own my first Z4 by the end of the month as my hire car expires and a purchase must be made :)
I'm looking for a 2003 ..blue or black with cream leather interior ..hopefully.
I am wondering if there is as little difference between MPG the 2.5 and the 3.0 as I have read and whether thsi should limit my search... It will be used for an equal mixture of town and motorway daily
depending on what rushhour traffic is like...husband has seen a Black Z4 with black colour coded split rim wheels..its causing quite a debate in the household
..love them or hate them? ..could these be a problem on this age car? Loads of questions but I am trying to remember to be practical!

hello and welcome

don't think there is much difference in mpg, if i was looking now i'd definately go for the 3.0ltr

also a coupe hehe

If it is going to be either a 2.5 or 3.0, I am with Taz x and would go for the 3.0 although unlike him I would opt for the correct model of Z4 and thats the roadster, The difference in MPG is basically negligable.
The black one you describe sounds nice, personally I am not a fan of black as it shows the dirt easily and it is soul destroying seeing the dust on it 2 minutes after you finished polishing it, But I have to say Black Z4 do look the business.

No Doubt the 4 pot boys will be along to preach the benifits of buying a 2.0

Hi gimligirl,

Well done for deciding to go for a Z4, I'm sure you won't be disappointed! I got mine in August and absolutely love it. As for the mpg I also read on here about there being little difference between the 2.5 and 3.0 as like you I was considering practicalities, and for me also running costs. I went for the 3.0 in the end and it is very reasonable on fuel. I get approximately 32-33 mpg on average and I also do a mix of city and motorway driving. On purely motorway drives I can get 34-36 mpg. Obviously i can't comment on the mpg of the 2.5 but purely in my own personal opinion I would go for 3.0 as you get more power (240bhp), but the running costs are still reasonable. I'm not sure what the alloys look like so can't comment, but black is definitely the way forward :D although can be difficult to keep clean! Good luck with your purchase!

Hi, I recently bought a 2004 2.5, with FBMWSH and 52K on the clock for just over £8K. Now is a very good time to buy, i had a look at around 3 or 4, but it took me two months to find the right one!

There isn't a great deal of difference in mpg, i went for the 2.5 as it was cheaper to insure. I get around 30mpg out of my car, like you mixed diving

Good luck with your search!

Hi & Welcome

As everyone is saying not much overall difference in MPG, in my opinion the only time the 2.5 is much better with MPG is around town, my 3.0 only does about 22 mpg, then get it on the open road its not unknown to get 40mpg

As always if you are looking for reliablity, check the service history, and if you can go for it get it checked over by the AA or RAC.

Good luck looking

a black 2.0 sport r is the way to go  might just know of one!

Great choice! I bought on condition, history and mileage and ended up with a 36k miles FBMWSH Sterling Grey & black leather 2.5SE. There is not a great deal of difference in real world performance or apparently on MPG (I get about 36 mpg in mixed driving). My 2.5 has the 5 speed which is fine but the 3.0 6 speed would probably make motorways even more refined. the 2.5 is cheaper to insure and may be worth checking tax bands on the pre-facelift models at least.

As has been mentioned there should be some cheap cars this winter, if you search the forum you will find some excellent buyers tips, so go for it

Thankyou all so much that has helped hugely! This weekend will be dedicated to searching as I don't have too long and really want to
look at as many as possible before falling in love and buying the first I see! :driving:
Will try and load some pics ..but as all things its gonna eventually come down to price.

Welcome to the forum :D

Good place to look is pistonheads and even Ebay also try BMW they do have stocks of early Z4 and be prepared to travel if you give us all a general idea of where you are located I am sure we can find some cars near you gives us ya rough budget lets see what we can do to help

you lot are all forgetting there wasn't a choice of a coupe in 2003 so it's not possible to buy the wrong car

I've got one!!!! Thanks so much for all your help .. After a couple of weeks of driving all over the country I bought a 2.5 roadster in Montego Blue with cream leather, 66000 miles on clock, 4 new tyres and just had it's level 2 inspection. Only picked it up yesterday so will be having some fun in it today .
Paid £8k for it from a dealer specialising in Convertibles ( includes 6 months warranty)
... And to top it all the new number plate he put on has the first two letters of my name to start..
The interior condition is great apart from a worn gearknob and a scuff on the edge of one seat.. I shall be trying to find a way to fix these if I can.. Not sure if a cream leather replacement gearknob can be done! And I also have runflat tyres which I see from other posts is not preferred but hey ho these can be changed in time.. For now I'm one very happy girl :D
