So some of you may ormay not know, I'm looking to sell the Z. :( mom said I'm a big boy now so I need to learn how to do things on my own. The problem is I don't have a clue what I'm doing? :? Since ill be buying my own car I have to sell my z4 but no clue. So how do I go about selling it? What would you pay for my z? Details: my bumper was drilled into place to connect it to the fender. I leak oil(dunno from were) driver side door doesn't open from outside. And there's a loud rattle/squeaking noise. And that's about it.

So if you knew all this what would you offer for it? Its a 2003 3.0i btw.

Also. Where should I start? I'm sooo lost? I hear I should trade it in? What does that mean?

Sorry about all the questions! :( thanks in advance!

I'd start by fixing the faults. Not many buyers will rush out to buy a car with faults...

Xiaxio, why you going man; we've only just got to know you! Getting another Zed or going the US way and buying a 'Vette' or some other North American classic?

If I were you I'd try to get the things you need fixing costed up first. If it's too expensive, figure out what you want to get for your car then take that amount off. Don't really know the market pricing for Zed's in the US so tricky to say. What mileage is she?

There aren't many USA members on this forum, in the UK we would look at Autotrader or maybe even Ebay to see what cars of this age and condition go for.

Not a lot by the sound of it!

Sounds a bit of a dog to be honest...trade it in buddy and save yourself any bother.

I'm still gonna stick around! but I'm trying to go for a 350z. Its a friends 350z so he can't do payments so need to get as much as I can.he's asking 13k for it so I'm looking for 10k but doubt that's happening? :headbang:

Btw.. Its got roughly around 115-116k

I can't seem to find out just what it means to trade it in?!

Do a part exchange deal for a newer car with a dealer.

Sounds like this isn't an option for you if you want your friend's car though.

Would it have to be another bmw?

Also, is it the best deal I can get? Or would I get a better deal selling on my own?

You always get a better price selling private but (without meaning to be offensive) you sound like you don't have a clue. If i came to buy a car from you i'd stitch you up like a kipper

I can only comment on practices here in the UK, I'm not familiar with car dealing in the USA.

No, it wouldn't have to be another BMW. You may get a better deal selling privately, although in my experience I've always been happy with part exchange deals. Try it out, you may be surprised and you can always walk away from the deal if you don't like it! Remember it does save you the hassles and expenses associated with a private sale.

Part Exchange/Trade in = the dealer effectively buys you current car off you, but instead of giving you cash, he takes the amount of money off the replacement car.

doesnt have to be the same brand or even new.

Typically however, they give you less than a private sale, cos they then have to re-sell the car to get the money back, and it might cost them money to get it in a good condition, and obviously, they want to make a profit.

A car part exchanged in the UK might be sold by the garage by £2000 or more extra than they gave the customer.

However, selling private often works out better for buyer and seller...you get more for the car than a part exchange would give you, but the seller pays less than dealer prices.

For example: Say you got $10,000 for your car part ex. The dealer might sell that car at $12000.

If you sold it privately, you might get $11000 for it...so you make an extra $1k, and the buyer saves $1k.

However...with a private sale, you have to pay to advertise it and any problems with the car, the buyer might come back to you.

If they buy from a dealer, they probably get a warranty.

Thanks a lot kevin! That was extremly helpful.

Xiaxio - You might try Craigslist. It is on on-line selling site. It mostly deals with people local to your area which is nice. I have sold 3 cars via Craigslist - 2 of them within 3 hours of posting. Maybe I priced them a little low - but I wanted to get rid of them quickly.
You can try to list it "as is" for a lower price, or fix it and try and get some more $$.
Maybe refer to Kelly Blue Book (http://www.kbb.com)- on line - to get some idea of current value, trade-in, private party etc, to use as a starting point.
Good Luck With The Sale.
