Questions about ditching runflats

1. What do you do about punctures? Just take a chance they won't happen? It's been a while since I last had a puncture

2. Does moving away from runflats make a noticeable difference to ride quality? I have sports suspension, 18" wheels and Dunlop runflats. Ideally would like to keep the 18" wheels and can't do anything about the suspension
 
Search is your friend - there are so many threads on ditching runflats - but carry a can of gunk and a small compressor and get ready to drive a completely different car! :thumbsup:
 
Makes a Huge difference i moved from 17" Runflats to 18" Non Runflats and the car is much better on the road and as others have said i carry a can of gel and a compressor.

Its worth remembering that Z4Ms don't have runflats fitted and have a mobility kit (Gunk and Compressor)
 
Ditch the run flats - your Zed will be transformed. I carry a BMW 'space-saver' spare on long journeys.

+1 I have a tin of gunk in the boot in case of puncture.

Transformed the ride quality. Night and day difference :)

If you go for this option OP then remember you need a jack and wheel brace also.
 
I went from 18'' with runflats to 19'' without runflats and the improvement in ride quality is huge.
I am a member of the RAC recovery and rely on them to fix any problem or get me home.
 
I have runflats fitted and thought the ride not bad, mind you i drove a Triumph TR4 before buying the Z so anything is going to be better.

Another issue to consider...I read a post on another forum claiming the 18 inch wheel will not fit in the boot forcing you to put it in the passenger seat...if you have a passenger you must leave your wheel and flat tire at the side of the road (or the passenger :rofl: ). It would be worth confirming you can get a wheel in the boot...anyone done that?

Interesting point about RAC... considering our cars are supposed to have runflats, what extent are RAC obliged to assist you i.e. do they even have the facility to repair tyres etc?
 
as soon as i bought my car i ditched the runflats, much cheaper and a better ride on 225,40,18s :D i had a puncture, not a bad one but did require filling up every few days and was a cheap repair which would be almost impossible on a runflat. i carry a few cans of the gel in my boot just in case but in the UK your never far from help.

My cover is for me and spouse as driver or passenger in any vehicle to get me recovered. I would suggest it is up to them to take the tyre and get it repaired at a tyre fitter, get a new tyre at my expense or, if it is beyond repair get me home.
