Question on Taxing A Car?

So i recently purchased a Z4 MC from a dealership that were selling it on behalf of the previous owner, i should be able to collect the car mid week.

The question is how do i go about taxing it? I have no paperwork (V5 or V11) so have absolutely no way of sorting this out. Would i be right in thinking that if i can get the part of the slip that you keep when you send away the V5, i should be able to take it into a post office? Or can i use that to do it online?

Any help would be appreciated.

Bit of research and i found the following on the gov website. So i need to get the garage to scan/email me a copy of the new keeper supplement and get online to tax the car.

Buying a vehicle
From 1 October, when you buy a vehicle, the vehicle tax will no longer be transferred with the vehicle. You will need to get new vehicle tax before you can use the vehicle.

You can tax the vehicle using the New Keeper Supplement (V5C/2) part of the vehicle registration certificate (V5C) online or by using our automated phone service - 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on 0300 123 4321.

Alternatively, you may wish to visit a Post Office® branch.

DVLA are unable to check the vehicle insurance details for new keepers in Northern Ireland online or by phone. If you’re a Northern Ireland new keeper, you will need to tax at a Post Office® branch that deals with vehicle tax.

I was just checking the same thing out -> you need the document reference number which is printed in the V5

And I need to find out how I get the refund now as I sold the Polo this week ...

Allegedly you will be refunded automatically after receipt by the DVLA of your part of the V5 that confirms the sale.

total confusion at the dealers of my wifes new car - dealer is stating that the car does not need taxing as it already has tax on it ( car has done 8 miles) but has been pre-regged. I think the salesman is wrong ! but need to get some clear info on it.

Ah yes, that will be interesting - any sale AFTER 30/9 has no tax on sale though, so I think you are right.

The b*stards are charging a huuuuuuuuge premium for monthly direct debit too - my wife's tax form came through on Friday, £285 paid in one go online, in person or DD - but 299.25 in total if you pay monthly by DD.

6 months paid online as normal with a card or in person is £156.75, but paid as a one-off DD is £149.63.

SORN has no fee against it - can't remember as I have never paid attention, but I guess that's normal ?

There is no justification for that. There is no cost attached to the monthly DD, look at the elec companies that will charge you LESS if you do monthly DD instead of DD on invoice.

Isn't that a tax on the less well-off again? If you have an older car as you can not afford a new one, you get taxed on higher CO2 and if you pay your tax my DD, you get an overall higher rate. Hmm.

Is that also on the V5C which is the new keeper supplement? Does the doc ref number stay the same after an owner change?

I wouldn't expect to pay less as its a fixed fee, but charging almost £15 more for a means of payment that costs them nothing is basically just theft. I'll be paying all at once, but not sure about DD because of course they will be able to just take the money next year...

For annual, DD does not sound like much of an advantage except for the risk that one of their IT projects failed and helps themselves a few times ...

The dealer will receive the refund once the car is registered to the new New keeper so ask the dealer to retax the car for you and they can visit the post office or phone the DVLA

i dont mind the 15 fee for direct debt. works out at an extra 1.25 a month so meh makes life a bit easier for me doing it monthly, im always getting hammered for the 6 months charge anyway esp on the westy...

sorn has always been free.

If it's the same as SORN'ing ihe refund is quick - I sorned my zed last week online and received the cheque for £166 squids refund yesterday :D

One thing to watch though is you can't SORN in advance - your SORN date starts from the day you apply so it's obviously best to SORN ( or sell if possible ) towards the end of the month .

As regards considering paying monthly it's cheaper just to buy 12 months VED and then reclaim it online when you want to reSorn the car - you can then choose how many months you need - simples !!

Actually whilst this has been revived.

Anyone know how long it takes insurance to register with the DVLA? The garage said i could pick the car up mid-week yet i still don't have the registration so can't insure it, and haven't been given the new keeper slip yet so couldn't tax it even if i wanted to.

Starting to get a bit pissed off with them really, as how hard can it be so scan a few documents over to me :headbang:
