Question for the DA users

Im about to purchase a new DA polisher.

trying to decide which pads and stuff to by is making my brain explode!!!!

are the 5.5 - 6" pads OK for use on the Z4 or do you find you need a mixture od the 4" pads too? I wasnt sure if the larger pads will be too big for the front bumer and lower side sills etc. especially as I have an aero front bumper. or do you just do the tight areas by hand?

all advice welcome as im going to buy all the bits to get started soon and I would rather get the correct bits the first time round.

Yes you will need a mix of sizes, the tops of the front wings for example require the smaller pads as you dont want to be moving over the panel gap to much as a panel edge will burn through quickly. dont forget to buy the correct size backing plates too.

The thought of burning through the paint scares the :bleep: out of me.... :o

Yep, i would always recomend the first time you use a DA or especially a rotary you practice on a scrap panel.
A general rule of thumb though is to not machine over edges to much.

TBH ive not used one or know any one who has so cant really comment but looking at them i dont think you would get much benefit over hand application other that less effort(feel free to correct me on that). I would recomend a DA as the way they work makes them beginer friendly. If you applied a compound by hand and worked to much on a corner/edge you could go through the clear/base etc.

Is random orbital better/worse or the same?

A random orbital is worse, much easier to damage paintwork in the wrong hands. EDIT - I should have said - more effective in correcting defects but more difficult to use.

I've only had my DA for a month or two and practiced on my DD first and then did the Zed on Friday. A doddle really. I am certainly no expert at all but in my experience it is very hard to damage the paint with a DA.

I'd echo what Turbokid said about smaller pads - definitely helpful. I've only got 5"/6" pads at the moment, so will be buying a smaller backing plate and pads soon. The other thing I'd say is that I would do as Scottbt advised me to do (which I ignored  ) and avoid the Menzerna pads (not their polishes - which are really good on our hard BMW paint). The Menzerna pads seem to start to disintegrate rather too quickly. I've got some Sonus SFX ones now which I've found a lot better.
