question about clutch

Slowly depressing the clutch without any gas pedal causes the revs to dip to almost 500 (from the usual 850-900 in idle) and the car stutters ever so slightly until the revs climb back up to norm and beyond. No such issues if accelerating away normally with a bit of gas pedal.

Is this normal? I don't get this in my diesel audi a4 - it just slowly moves off without any notable dip in revs.

I read on this forum about similar issues being traced back to clutch wear, CDV and even VANOS.

Anyone has this issue with their Z? Or am I just being too picky?

I wouldnt say this is the CDV, releasing the clutch slowly the CDV would have no effect. I would put the main difference down the the fact the diesel has more torque to begin with and that alone is the reason. I could pull away in my 320d's just by releasing the clutch and it would go forever on tickover, but not possible with the Z4.

So you have the same experience?

I just can't remember this happening on previous petrol cars (Mk 5 golf GTI?)

It isn't a problem as such but if it is a sign of somehting wearing out or going wrong I'd rather know about it now.
