Question about 2006 Z4M's Car Tax vs 2007

Due to me being given a puppy back in Feb, I started looking into what would be the best option for having him in my car with me. I eventually started looking into getting an E39 Alpina B10 V8. The tax and insurance was about £500+ a year cheaper than my '07 Z4MR. I also looked at a 2011-2013 Alpina B3 Bi-Turbo, which again is cheaper than my Z4MR.

I remember seeing in some threads, that the 2006 Z4M's avoided the tax bracket that an '07 is landed with? The reason why I bring this up, is with the markets for Z4MC's getting weaker and the fact I always wanted a coupe (plus they are more practical for my needs), I'm going to use my E85 Z4MR as a P/X towards a Z4MC, but I was hoping that they built some early enough in '06 for the cheaper tax bracket? What is the difference in price? I think it was mentioned that an '06 is about £300 a year?

If anyone wants to do a deal with me for their Z4MC and my Z4MR, I'll be able to do so once the lockdown has ended. My dog (Bertie) has not been in my Z4MR, so it's not got claw scratches or the "lovely" odore that dogs have.

You’ll be lucky to find an ///M in the early tax bracket. Had to be registered before 23rd March 2006 from memory and I think I’ve only ever seen 2 or 3.

Can’t think that somebody is likely to want to sell a coupe for a roadster with an increase of double the VED as well per year.

From memory, Steve you might recall better than me as well, the cheap cars have all been roadsters.

When I got my Z4MR, it was £10,500 and a similar spec Z4MC was about £17,750 , where I've seen a fair few coupe's around £13,000. I would P/X at a dealership and with it being the start of the summer when we might be coming out of lockdown, it's typically the best time to sell a convertible.

I didn't realise it was as early as 23rd March to get into the different tax brackets. Thanks for the confirmation about how bloody tricky it would be to find an M built so early. I could potentially go over to an Alpina Roadster, as they are in that lower bracket tax wise, but I really would prefer a coupe.

Bar the £3500 repair bill I had in Nov when all the springs and mounts had to be done, as well as the rear brake lines, the running costs have been pretty decent with my Z4MR.

As a recent purchaser of an Z4Mc I can only provide my limited experience.
I'd been looking for a number of years watching the Mc market. I was fortunate to find a good example privately and managed (due to the on-going world problems) to get what I considered a steal of a deal. 13K with 83k on the clock for a well looked after example with FSH all documented.

My plan is to run 2 cars, therefore halving the tax and potential running cost of the Mc.
Just over £300 for the Mc for 6 months April - September. Then I will put her up in my garage for the winter months.

My other car is an X5 so of course not so cheap but you can always look at cheaper motors to get you through....

Good luck

I think they are. Have a feeling they were probably press cars as I think they were all launch colours as well.

Like finding a unicorn, very few.

Mines an early car in release colours but missed out by a month.

Is £250 in tax really worth worrying about in the grand scheme of things. Like £6 a week...

Is the insurance more for the coupe?

Your also pigeonholing yourself into a very small number of cars and will any of them actually be what you want? Hard to find the colour combo in the Z4 as it is in either the R and the C.

I also have had both, MC first moved to MR. Also have a cocapoo she loves being the the car have a seat with a belt for her. Can’t touch the leather and is nice and secure.

Personally although the coupe is gorgeous and I loved it in all honesty they are very similar in every way and dare I say the roof down makes you feel more intouch, everything is more muted in the coupe.

I never drove a roadster until I bought one and although I know the induction a wrasp is significant when the car drives by you (I photographed it a lot 😂) when your in the noise is muted. The roady on the other hand completely the opposite.

The coupes is a much better looking car imo and on the track marginally better because of rigidity. On the road... been impressed with the roady and at the time I bought mine saved me 10k... was looking for a very long time. Yes you can get a MC for 13k but I didn’t find one I was happy with, loads with super poor history and needed plenty spending to get right. If you want a good one they still command the money for obvious reasons.

Since the coupe had 3 verts 987 boxster S 996 C4S and now back to the MR. Think I’m a convert...

Well I've just had a look at the database Tony on here put together and going by that the first UK spec MC was built on 15 February 2006, so may just have been registered before 23 March - the next one wasn't built until April, so there just may be one eligible Coupe!

Again thanks guys.

I genuinely like my roadster, but I've always loved the look of the coupe. The tax is just outrageous compared to what I was paying before with previous car and what dad was paying on his E46 M3.

I've always love the rear slope of the coupe and just think they are just that 1% superior to the roadster in the looks department.

When looking at a potential £18k car and the cost of swapping, I'd say that the £300 difference a year in RFL pales into insignificance. By PX'ing to a dealer your always going to lose money. probably equivilent to about 3 years tax

Compared to what they pay in Ireland, it’s pennies

£500 is a drop in the ocean for a daily driver...my car was doing 25,000 miles a year...probably spent £6k on fuel, £3k on servicing & maintenance, £1k in BMW warranty.

For a garage queen doing less than 5,000 miles a year, it’s a slightly different story, but you’d still be spending £1500 a year on fuel/maintenance - and you can save on the tax by SORNing it for the months you won’t use it.
