Query re boot space Z4 E89

Possibly naive question. What is it that prevents usage of the left/right boot areas when roof is down?
I haven't actually looked in the boot with the roof down since collecting the car - snow, rain, cold etc..
Is there anything that could be stored there without problem? e.g a pair of shoes, small first aid kit, small fire extinguisher etc. or is such storage an absolute no no?

Deffo not an option its were the roof macanicals go dealer told me even a small item can mess up roof and he had seen one bent with just a small item in there. :!:

Roof sides fit there. Any objects placed there and roof would crush them or you'd damage the roof.

You know those stickers that show a 'Don't place anything here' symbol? They're not there for fun.

If you put the roof down into the folded position and then open the boot you will see how much room there is left. None!

Thanks all for confirming what I thought was probably the case. As I said not had chance to have roof down and poke about in the boot.
With the snow and extreme cold not likely to have need of top down for some time - grrrr!

Defo a no no. When you see your roof retracting you will see why nothing can be placed there. If you put something substantial on one side only it would twist the roof mechanism.

There is a small cubby space under the door in the floor on the left hand side
its surprising spacious. You could get a first did kit i. There, no problem.

Is it just me or is this a real design issue for any car with a metal folding roof ?

If you're away carrying an overnight (or longer) bag, you can't have the roof down at any point !

We're doing a 2 week driving tour of Europe and Italy in our e85, but I couldn't imagine doing that trip without the ability o put the roof down.

The space in the boot with top down is actually not bad at all really, the issue is you cant get things in and out without putting the top up.

i was able to go away with the ex for 2 weeks including a tent and 2 sleeping bags (ok so these were stuffed behind the seats!) and we could have the top down. :)

Roadster bags! :thumbsup
At least you can get full use of the space available.

We managed touring Spain last year roof up and down and mrs bs doesn't travel lightly. Careful packing is he key

Tripp do cases that fit the E85 perfectly, 410 mm wide so two fit in very nicely! :D

I think there's still a decent amount of space with the roof down. We got a cabin sized case and a big soft bag in no trouble.

We travelled last year with one of the Tripp cases from the previous E85 and a grip but the grip had to be packed half full and carefully.
I'm looking forward to the Euro trip this year when the boot can be used to its capacity and we dont look like hillbillies when we arrive and depart from our hotels en route. :D

One big bag isn't an option for me these days I'm afraid 'cos i cant lift any more. (or I shouldn't even try) :(

Braved the extreme cold yesterday to try to fit my Boxster 'Roadster Luggage' which remains after disposal of the Box with the Z4 roof down!

The 2 smaller cases designed for the front boot of a Boxster fit perfectly stacked at the cabin side of the boot with no problem at all, no forcing, just sling 'em in. The specially designed 3rd case which contours to the rear boot of a Boxster didn't fit mainly because of its protruding wheels and very specific shape.

However plenty of space to fit a very large long holdall in the remaining space.

I reckon I can get as much in a Z4 as I could in a Box. Possibly more as the behind the seats area with the 'ski/golf' extension area also provide a fair bit of space for laptop, first aid kit and all the other nonsense you have to take to the EU.

When I test drove the Z4 I took a very large case which had served me well for 2 week holidays in Florida, Egypt etc. and one of the smaller Boxster cases and they fitted OK as well, so there are a number of options.

All I need is a break in the weather to actually get down to the Chunnel!
