Quaife now installed... with LSD-flavour pix

Can we expect one of those Chris Harris style videos - with beautifully captured slo-mo camera action of a perfectly executed drift in #320? :driving:

Extremely unlikely, I'm afraid - rush hour traffic and lack of Harris' drifting ability will conspire against me

Cant believe i have missed this thread!!
Perry you wont regret it as said previously LSD=Best mod ever I think you will be pleasantry surprised how the LSD improves all aspects of the z4 handling.
Yes i know its an ALPINA but its still a z4 as well.... First of it will help the rear axle deliver power and not inter-fear as much with everything turned on. And you will start driving the car with the stability control in its middle setting. As you will be able to drive the car better and have more control. Then it will be off more than its on.
But what surprised me most was how it changes turn in as well. And how the front of the car is much more pointy in slow corners.

PS someone please PM me if there is a Cotswold mini hoon!!

All the best and enjoy

Oh yes... all the way, nice balmy 8 degrees at 6:30 this morning, dropped to 6 as I got further up into the frozen north around Gatwick though

If any need replacing, they'll be replaced - silly not to while everything's dismantled

Just going to add a few pictures...
Get in there and give it all a clean when they are not looking

The insides of a diff.

My LSD right cheap rubbish BMW open diff left.

This was not the actually the diff i installed they sent me the wrong diff :headbang: notice the height difference from the matting face of the gear ring.. 11.5mm different they sent me a diff for an auto

Just noticed the drive shafts just left hanging!! :o Maybe i was over cautious but i kept mine tied up? They have left the bolts in as well are they not fitting new ones??
I was advised to use new ones i did think it was over kill. And i guess these guys know what they are doing. I think you just worry and take more care when its yours.
Probably why my diff install ended up taking 8 weeks!! And i put new this that painted everything.....

I dare say if the drive shafts were left like that for 8 weeks you'd want them supported, but for a few hours.... Birds fit lots of Quaife diffs so I'm confident that they know what they're doing - same goes for the bolts...

I've told them that, if they think anything needs replacing, replace it - cheaper to do it now than have it all apart again later

I am sure they do. I do think your over cautious working on you own P&J!!

Absolutely worth replacing now.. Especial if they have the bits there. and dont need to wait for delivery!! Like i did and i had to wait for 3 weeks for the correct diff. Thats my defense for it taking 8weeks!!
And like i say i will just paint that bit o and look now that bit needs doing :headbang:

I know exactly what you mean Matt, the only problem is, when you're doing it yourself the only additional cost other than parts is your own time so you can be as meticulous as you like and even scrub every nook and cranny with a toothbrush if you wish - but very few people can afford to pay someone else to be that anal

Agreed and you find the weekend job takes 8 weeks

And during nice sunny weather so you cant enjoy the bloody thing :headbang:

Still my car is bloody clean and well maintained underneath.....

Anyway, a few more progress pics

OEM diff dismantled - new Quaife diff in centre
Quaife_07.jpg

Sometime later, Quaife diff mantled into OEM casing
Quaife_08.jpg

Something nice going on in the back - Large brakes, Supersprint exhaust and a remap in progress
Quaife_09.jpg

Great to see that someone's actually using a Z8 instead of locking it away because it's worth too much :driving:

O very nice love the pictures Perry

What type of LSD is the Quaife? It looks great love the insides of engines gearboxes and diffs

Are they re-using the bearing from the old diff?? I did mine where tip top and i couldn't get new ones. Just interested how they get top bearing off (as you look at your picture) I had to put mine on a lathe and machine the diff housing to get a set of pullers on it!!
