Quad Exhausts

Hello everyone

Has anyone fitted the MStyle quad exhaust system to their car as described here?

http://www.mstyle.co.uk/acatalog/BMW_Z_Z4_Z4M_M_Style.html

I am looking to fit a quad system and would welcome any comments from those who have already conducted this modification, whether it be with MStyle or other such as Blueflame or Eisenmann.

Thanks

Wayne

Use the search, that's what it's there for :poke:

As I understand it these aftermarket systems for non M cars are contructed much like the OE set-up but with a branch pipe coming off forward of the backbox, which is then routed across underneath the rear of the car. I would be concerned that, while being fuctional, there may be a loss of efficiency? nevermind an increase in power. Eisenmann have a good reputation, maybe contacting them with some relevant questions would reap the info you're after.
I was interested in the offer MStyle have for a M tech body kit and quad exhaust ( for my Clubsport ) my front bumper and side skirts are starting to look a bit secondhand, but I think thats their own version, I've seen one which looked a bit gash to be honest as the pipes exited underneath the rear diffuser.

Most of the aftermarket (well all actually AFAIK) simply have a revised backbox with a T pipe into the box running across the rear of the car inside the rear bumper cover. I doubt there will be any significant increase or decrease in performance from them and they provide a cheap way of getting a quad pipe look.

You'd need to understand how these guys mod the standard rear bumper cover as the left side is moulded. I suspect they just cut a crudish opening on the RHS that would be obvious if you looked closely. You cant replace with a ///m as the rear light profile is different, unless you mod tghe bumoper or change the lights (complex)

You'll also get the effect of steaming on one side as I'm sure 90% of the exhaust follows the simple left exit.

I certainly don't advocate anyone do it how I did it, unless you love the challenge :)

Not a problem with facelift models as the ///M rear is a direct swap. (I know you know that CJ)

Do you know I'm not actually sure about that. It will fit the lights, bott lip and around the wings, etc. but there has to be some fettling or work underneath as the ///M has a crude set of diffuser chanels that vent into the mesh between the tail pipes. It is however way easier than on the prefacelift :)

Thanks for all your replies. First of all let me state that I am not looking for any power gains just simply the look. Naturally, I do want the system to be fully functional, i.e. equal amounts of smoke (or as near as dammit) from both sides and I don’t want the system to be excessively loud.

My car is an Alpina Roadster S to which I have already carried out the modification of fitting a Z4M rear bumper and facelift style rear lights, therefore I have the cut out on the O/S of the car, so no cutting will be required. I have been in touch with a UK Eisenmann agent but was left somewhat concerned when they couldn’t tell me exactly how long the job would take and therefore couldn’t give me a fixed price. They also stated that there may be a requirement to fit bits and bobs such as couplers, bends etc. As you will appreciate I’m a slight quandary because I thought their duplex system was a straight forward fit. I then looked at the MStyle web site only to find what appears to be a similar system for half the price, hence my initial question of; has anyone fitted the MStyle duplex system or other similar duplex system?

After some considerable thought I am leaning towards taking the same approach as CJ10jeeper so I'm on the look out for either a used cat back M sytem or a pair of M boxes. Depending upon how sucessful my search turns out to be will dictate whether or not I actually get underway with the project.

So if anyone knows of anyone wishing to sell such items please give me a shout.

Thanks

so you are going to move the battery tray like CJ did then, as it's the only way you can do it.

Wayne,

Keep an eye on Ebay breakers. They may appear from time to time and I'd be surprised if they sell as the M's not been out long enough to wear them out. Also of course many ///M owners end up changing the rears well before they are due.

SR - I'm sure having seen that Wayne has already done the rear light conversion and added an ///M bumper (and exchanged PM's with me) he knows all about the battery box, plating the rear up, rerouting cables, removing the petrol vapour filter and a myriad of other minor changes to make it all work.

I will keep an eye on ebay breakers but in the meantime I have obtained a price from Blueflame for an M system, which I assume is a cat back system for £695 inc. fitting and VAT. I have arranged to pay them a visit early next month to discuss it. Has anyone had any experience of Blueflame systems?

I am aware of the need to make changes to the battery compartment and re-plate the boot floor but must confess I need some advice on the petrol vapour filter.

It is my intention to ask lots of questions when I visit Blueflame and for them to advise on how much room will need creating at the expense of the battery compartment to accommodate the M style back box.

And new rear bumper as well? You need a custom-made rear diffuser like CJ got. :)

I've already fitted the bumper. I fitted a Z4M bumper and facelift rear lights all wired up and working thanks to another forum member 'Ondie' who provided me with the wiring solution. I do need the black plastic mesh that fits the M bumper however as I've currently got some stainless steel mesh fitted, which quite frankly looks naf, looks like chicken wire.

Here's the carbon filter you need to think about that inside the rear RHS bumper cover:

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=BT52&mospid=47797&btnr=16_0540&hg=16&fg=10

In the end after some research I slung the lot and capped the vacuum feed to the engine. I came to the conclusion that it's for emission tests where the vehicle warms up expands the fuel and any vapour is passed though a charcoal filter then vented to the engine.

Still on my bench to refit if I ever need it...lol

i took my z to blueflame so they could use it as a pattern for the exhaust about a month ago.they are a real top bunch of people and are very easy to deal with.i am very happy with the exhaust,it isn't too loud and has made quite a dif in performance and throttle response.the finish is very good.i have posted some pics on my thread on here and also some on photobucket.i did only pay £1.20 for mine as they couldn't get hold of a z and i won it on their ebay listing

wayne, any update on this? I have just emailed MStyle about this and they replied saying that...

This part for the Z4 is a complete new rear section, not just the T piece.

I'm waiting on them to give me a run through on what they exactly do for the conversion. If it's a change in battery compartment, additional back box, etc then for £607.93 it's a good price, no?

Got some pics from them. Only the one backbox...

What do you guys think though. They look really good. Do you think i'll have exhaust smoke ratio and/or power loss issues as menioned before?

EDIT: Another M badge! :headbang:

Is he talking about the same part? The one listed on their site at that price is the MStyle one - which I believe is a single back box with a T section - so technically "complete back system". The first pic makes me think that the Eisenmann system :?

Also, and I could be wrong, but that back box looks quite big - I wonder if this is the Eisenmann system (below) and is essentially twin boxes stuck together with 1 tailpipe going straight out and the other around the corner behind the battery. Not overly familiar with the size of back boxes!

Nice thing with Eisenmann they are custom built to order and you can choose standard road, fast road (normal at lower speeds and gets louder as revs increase) or track ( proper loud all the way). That's the marketing at least.

Eisenmann rear exhaust section 4x76mm
Product Ref: z4-ei-4
Eisenmann rear section for 2.0, 2.2, 2.5 and 3.0 models with 4x76mm tailpipes, please state if your car has the standard or Aero rear bumper at time of order
Price:£1,225.00

Anyone who know a little more about the exhausts confirm... or your man for that matter, Peddy?

I just put this to them in an email and they replied...

It is our own one but looks a lot like the Eisenmann version.

This should not affect the smoke or performance.

Worth it?

A little evasive - hasn't answered the question at all about how the back box is constructed. I think that is going to be important - if it is single box you're just diverting the outlet. If it is two boxes stuck together (as Porsche do for some models) with two separate chambers, if that's the right term, and their own inputs and outputs then it will certainly make a difference - that latter giving a nicer burble, I suspect similar to CJ's custom setup.

I don't recall the conclusion but there was a thread with a much more intelligent summary of what you get with the T piece type setup.

For the look it seems like a good price - personally I'd probably get the Eisenmann system (and wait if cost was an issue) as I don't know what the MStyle kit is like... or if I had a budget of £600 or there abouts stick with a single box / twin outlet setup from one of the exhaust manufacturers, Remus, BlueFlame, Eisenmann, etc.

But that's just me and there's not too much science behind my train of thought!

EDIT: Just to add... I would only expect to see marginal performance gains from one of the big exhaust guys if any, preference based on noise / build quality. As for the MStyle package, I think they'd have to be quite negligent to build something that has a negative affect on the car.
