put your transmisson of choice in order

Assume we are talking about a Z4? Manual then Auto.

Anything but the SMG fitted to the Z4, its atrocious.

SMG II, SMG III, DCT....on the other hand, all fine by me

i know i asked about the z4, but the e46 smg, is raved about and found on the csl model

Completely different to the SMG on the Z4. Thats SMG II, whereas the Z4 has Version 1 (old E36 SMG). SMG III is a similar leap forward from the E46, and DCT on the E92 is apparently even better than that (not driven it yet, only a manual). I used to have an 04 M3 with SMG and it was very good.

The SMG in the Z4 is hated on a bit in the forums. A bunch of us have them anyway. :)

Just drive one and you'll know if you like it or not. I don't think it should be such a polarizing option. One thing is for sure, the new(er) systems are smoother, but that doesn't mean the old one doesn't work. In fact, its quite more reliable than the SMG II / III system (in my purely unscientific poll of looking at problems reported on forums, and total lack of issues with mine).

SMG (would prefer DCT)
Manual
Auto

SMG isn't as great as it is on the M3 for sure, but once you get used to it and know how to use it it isn't halfway as bad as people make out. I quite like it when pressing on with sport mode enabled. I haven't tried super-sport mode yet though.

just read the UK 3.0 Auto kicks out more than 225 CO2 (g/km), which puts it into the higher tax band, so that would put me off, just for that

According to my Ins Co, it was a Group higher too. I had the argument with them over SMG - manual or auto.

I'll take the old trusty manual tranny any time over an auto/ semi auto / semi manual or whatever new gadget is on the market
