Push button start

Anyone retro fitted this to their M? I've seen a youtube video of a chap who had it fitted but wondered if anyone had success with it on here, or if not, your thoughts on it?

I think push button starts can look a bit stupid TBH. Especially ones where you have to insert some kind of a key first... surely it's just an unnecessary extra step to starting the car?

Lol, I think you're missing the point, extra step or not, some people like pressing buttons and flipping switches :)

It would go nicely where the sport button is, but then where would you relocate the sport button?
The current batch of Ferrari steering wheels look cool with all the switches if you're into that sort of thing... Let us know if you find an "M" compatible equivalent :thumbsup:
 
in my old e90 it was nice. push the key fob into slot. push button. im afraid when you got traditional key it somehow feels wierd to put key in, turn to 2, push button. it is not an airplane type scenario. wouldnt do it. push the aport button instead!
 
It has been done using the cig lighter as the housing, but having to use the key still seems illogical.
 
Why bother? I've a fob-in-the-slot then push button set up in another car and it's a PITA, two steps instead of one. The work could mess something electrical and should probably be notified to your insurance company. :oldman:
 
Had push button on the 335 and was a nice novelty to have. Guess it added a very small sense of drama. Don't find myself going to push the dash on the Z now though! (Although I still seem to have it in my head that the Z has iDrive - always reaching down to change the map on the nav only to find I'm fondling the handbrake gaiter).
 
I want to say its the 2010 gtr that I liked how you just have to have the key fob in your pocket and press start I like that it seems like something from a James bond film or something 8)

Indeed, in this instance I am definitely missing the point.. and each to their own... but the OP did as for our thoughts on it!?

I am sure there are many things that I do / have done to my car which others think is similarly pointless.
 
On a car with a key - great if you like a bit of drama, otherwise as othes say, just an extra step.

On a car with plug in key fob and nearby start button (eg1 series) good idea as no need for metal key, finding column, etc.

On a car with contactless entry - excellent feature. Walk up, step in. Press start button, car comes alive and starts up. Great and dramatic (eg jags)

I've driven a Mercedes with contactless entry and the push-button start is fun, but I was paranoid about the car not being locked when I walked away. Fortunately it wasn't mine :D
 
To be fair keyless entry and push start was nice on a hire car I had, but have a little read about the problems caused when the key battery goes bad. Not funny.
 
My bosses DB9 with the Mindoro key is a hotch potch.

Put key in ignition, turn to position to and then press the button. Obvious cost cutting :thumbsdown:

His other car is an Eagle E Type, so the DB9 gets little use.

I had a drive in the DB9 the other week, but he wont let me out in the Eagle. Mind you I wouldn't want to drive it knowing what it cost.
 
A mix bag of opinions on this one, thanks to everyone who has replied! The reason why I liked the idea is purely because I've got used to it in my 130. I really like the fob and button feature and to be honest because I've had a Viper alarm system enabled with engine immobiliser etc it's definitely better in terms of any scum theives out there. However a valid point regarding still having to use the key... The chap who fitted my alarm (when I have it all transferred) said he can set up the feature for me so Ill probably go for it, it may be a bit novelty but I do like the look of it :D
