Puncture

I collected my first puncture in a long time tonight driving mrs K ‘s 335
So it's either a £15 repair or a £250 tyre replacement

Think I went nearly 40 years of driving with no punctures and then had 2 in one year. Both repaired at KwikFit for 20 quid as the tyres still had 5mm of tread.

I hope it's not runflat which I have on the 140i as will most likely be a new tyre alhough they can be repaired if not driven far, thats if you can find someone prepared to do it.

My biggest fear is the alloy being damaged

Tim.

I had to do 10/l15 miles on it.
It is a runflat (which are ok on the 335) and is star marked so suppliers are limited if la new tyre is needed..

Guessing it's a runflat Ron? If so I'm unsure what the maximum distance they can be run at and at what speed. I think the issue is the sidewall overheating and compromising tyre structure. It might say in the handbook :?

Sorry I had a typo - I drove 10 to 15 miles!
The tyre was quite warm but not hot when i got home.

Once you’ve run any distance on a run flat with it deflated it’s a new tyre time..

I think for peace of mind it might be.

It’s not peace of mind..it’s been structurally compromised…

I meant that even if it looks ok - for peace of mind it will be replaced.
The car is XDrive so i will have to look at the tread depths of the other three tyres - this could be an expensive puncture!

Yes does sound like a new tyre time then. Upside is you can carry on driving but downside is a new tyre. I actually don't dislike runflats, especially if getting a flat on a smart motorway. No way I'd want to be stopping on a live lane

I decided to take the wheel off and inspect the tyre.
Unfortunately there is a tiny hole in the sidewall - there is no debris left the hole and I’m at a loss as to what has caused it. Nevertheless, the decision to buy a new tyre has been made for me.

I’m now off to see if there’s been any malicious activity on my dash camera!

Ps

Just checked the Dashcam and nothing recorded - maybe it’s just my suspicions mind!

As a footnote- the wheels and tyres were fitted by a BMW main dealer last July - in order to get the wheel nut loose I had to use a socket on a breaker bar then use a 1.5m pipe.
They must have have used a windy hammer gun set to 11

Yesterday hit a small pothole with my 6 series. Punctered side wall on an almost new front tyre and a new one will arrive tomorrow. Hoping that the alloy did not suffer damage :headbang:

It depends how low the pressure was when were driving, but over that distance it could have been pretty low. While it might look OK but I believe they degrade internally long before you see any signs on the tyre walls.

Definitely sounds like new tyre time to me.

My X3 went in for service in March I had a phone call FOS puncture NSR puncture :x

I must say that although it’s an unwelcome expense and a bit of unnecessary hassle - it all pales into insignificance when compared to the situation N4lly and his fellow sufferers find themselves in - so I apologise if I sound like I’ve been bleating on about a non real problem!

It’s not in the same league.

New tyre fitted this morning “ £245 to you sir!”
The dealer is going to look at the very very tight wheel bolts on Thursday/Friday.

Glad you sorted it Ron, I think any place that fits tyres always seem to overtighten wheel nuts, probably to cover themselves as who checks them after 100 miles to retorque.

Tim.

I spoke to the service manager this morning and he wants me to take the car in to have the bolts cleaned, de greased and refitted to the correct torque.
