Some people opt for a spacesaver tyre in the boot too.

You can of course get a can of tyre gunk and a compressor (or some of the tyreweld stuff you don't even need one) which will help you limp home, but 9/10 that ruins the tyre so can't be repaired. If I got a puncture near my house my first point of call would be a local tyre garage to come and take the wheel off there and then, or the AA if outside normal working hours.
 
I already have the breakdown cover but if i am in the middle of the Lake district i need the option to get out of the hills so a space saver seems the way.Any recommendations?

there is a gunk you can put in the tire when you dont have a puncture - and it seals any holes you get - i wonder if it is worth considering

That's a cheap on from India, I got mine in the uk, 10 rubber strips, 5 small and 5 large, they work great, fixed a mates tyre a few months ago and it's not leaked. It's a permanent repair.
Never need go to a tyre shop again.

I thought the worm/plug/mushroom type repair kits were not meant to be used as a permanent repair on tyres with a W, Y, or Z rating. I thought the only 'legal' permanent repair on a W/Y/Z tyre had to be hot galvanized?

Although anything is better than nothing in an emergency - just don't plan on doing a trackday or 1000 miles on it :P

I know they say not a permanent repair bit I can't see why not.
A mate used on on his r1 did a trip round Europe and a track day at monza, I think ill be ok going to work!
 
Picked up a nail at a track day a while back and successfully effected a repair with a mushroom headed wood screw. Finished the last session on it and made it home too.

You've got bigger balls than me then, as I'd have driven home carefully after affecting a 'temporary' repair, and wouldn't have even attempted to do the last session on a known damaged tyre.
