Pump Frustrations

Hi all,

I tend to use the same Esso petrol station as its on the way to work and no matter what pump I use (super unleaded) I have a devil of a job filling up which takes an age as the auto cut off keeps kicking in :x its so %%&**&g frustrating, put 50 quids worth in and it was constant click click click so I end up trickling the fuel in. I've tried going deep or just first 2 inches, holding the nozzle at angles and twisting the nozzle round as much as I can. Sometimes it improves things but as I pull the trigger fully it will cut off again  I've also used a Gulf Station and had the same but it wasn't quite as bad.

Any ideas?

Cheers,

Tim.

I have to tilt the nozzle a bit, but never have major issues. It's usually clapped out pumps that cause the bother

I think you might be right on the clapped out pumps as I've used the same station for 28 years lol and I don't ever remember the pumps ever being swapped out, however I don't have this problem with the Z3 or previous 1 Series using the same pumps :|

Could be a problem with the filler neck,do you know anyone else locally with an E89 to compare it with?

Unfortunately I don't but I might mention it to the dealer as it needs to go in due to Phantom TPMS going off after each wash

I had that last week too, most of the times I use the same pump but didn't have troubles each time filling up though. It seems that once it cuts off, it'll cut off again and again. Taking the nozzle out and putting it in again and being easy on the trigger seems to help. Have had it with more cars in the past, so wouldn't worry too much about it.

I get this with my Z as well, dont seem to matter what angle i put the nozzle in if i press the filler handle anywhere near full on it just clicks off.

Dont seem to matter where i fill up. (Always either use V-power or supermarket super if no shell station around)

Normally tends to work for me just putting the first two inches in, twisting the nozzle round a bit and then going deep... You've got to warm them up Tim and make them want the full length :D

Yes I get this to , I mostly use the same petrol station so it might be a pump thing , but I have encountered it at other ones.

I have found it best not to squeeze to hard so petrol flow slowly , boring but it does stop you wanting to kick something

The auto cut off works by the amount of back vapor given off when filling, so slow filling or changing the angle of the nozzle will help reduced the problem. Fuel tank runs are one of the hardest things to setup up on the cars and are often sacrificed for boot volume or side impact requirements so if there are a lot of E89 having the problem you might just have to live with it...... :( :(

I was wondering how long it would take :o 50 quid seems cheap for this

Thanks for all the replies :) looks like I might not be the only one with this problem :?

Will try the deep angled approach and if that doesn't work discuss it with the young lady at BMW
