Pulsing engine when reversing 35iS

Anyone had this - it is difficult to describe but basically when reverse engages and you feather the throttle to move backwards the car almost goes with the throb of the engine like the gearbox / clutch is not right and not engaging properly. I have noticed it a few times and my other 35iS didn't do it. Any ideas ... ? I will mention it to the dealer when the car goes in on 1st June anyway if it keeps doing it ... just wondered if anyone else has had the issue.

No such issue with mine. Haven't noticed anything untoward when reversing.

Will have a listen / pay special attention next time to see if I can detect anything.

A slight shuddering on taking up the drive in reverse may be another way I could put it ... a bit like clutch judder.

I had this on my 35i DCT some years back. A slight wobble upon first engagement for a second or so. They replaced the DCT eventually after trying new fluid and a reprogram. I think I feel it still now and again or it's probably just in my mind having had it on the first DCT.

It was quite mild but irritating. I asked for a replacement as it made me doubt the longevity of the DCT but in hindsight it was probably nothing more than minor movement in the mounts.

Hmmm, ok thanks for the info - I will mention it when it goes in on 1st June !

Just noticed it does it reversing into my drive - so when the steering is putting the engine under load. In a straight line back it doesn't seem to do it .... more checking me feels before I abuse BMW :D

The car is certainly going well forwards at the moment

I experienced similar symptoms with our 35i and manged to alleviate them with an adaptive transmission reset.

It's as though the throttle doesn't like the smaller more gentle movements associated with reversing after getting accusotmed to going forwards more quickly ;)

Reversed up my curvy drive a couple of times today - no problems or odness at all.

No problems here either SO8, just a fair old clunk when engaging reverse.

Keep us posted on this please, and I hope it's a simple fix.

My wife has a 2006 X3 2.5si auto and it does exactly this in reverse but only when engine is cold. If I give it some throttle it goes smooth again although obviously quicker (a little too quick for the reverse out of the garage). Doesn't do it when engine is up to heat though.

Hmmmm.... odd.... DCT on mine has become a little clunky and there does seem to be a delay in engaging into reverse. I am getting mine booked in shortly. Will let you know how I get on.

Cheers

JC :D

Thread revival from many years ago but I cant find a newer one.

My daughters E89 23i is having the same issue as the OP's first post, has anyone had it and solved it?

Is it an auto?

It is slightly over 60k….. 178k!

Something I’ve been meaning to do tbh, tend to do a fluid change to all my own cars. We’ve owned it from 174k, it’s a forum car.
