Puddle in boot (in battery compartment) - issue found

Whilst giving my E86 a proper clean this morning I noticed my battery was sitting in a puddle of water. Annoyed I started removing carpet and trim until I could find where it was coming from. The carpet was bone dry so I didn’t think the boot seals were to blame.
I eventually found the issue. There is vent on both sides between the rear wheels and light clusters. The rubber seal on this vent was completely perished.
Here is pic showing the location of the vent (already removed). This is the drivers side (UK) and right in the internal corner of the car (would be behind the bumper from the outside).

And here is the removed vent and damaged seal.

I’m going to order a new one and hopefully that will cure the issue.

[ref]ben g[/ref] check the little plastic threaded inserts that receive the screws that hold the body coloured plastic tail light trims in place. They're cream in colour and have a little black rubber skirt on the topside that should keep water out. When that perishes, water can track down and drip into the boot space. If you run a hose pipe over the back end and let water collect on top of the rear lights, switch the water off and then open the boot and look round and up to where the threaded inserts protrude, see if you can feel/see water on the pointy too of the inserts.

Cheers mate I'll give that a try. That sounds like it may well be the culprit, as in heavy rain, both 'pockets' on either side of my boot become wet. Thanks for the heads up

That would tie in with the location of the threaded inserts. Fingers crossed! I bought new ones for pennies. Will see if I can find my post about it.

Just had a downpour, so went out and had a feel underneath those screws, inside the boot. There's certainly damp and small amounts of water around those parts, so hopefully once I replace them, that'll be the end of the wet boot saga. Cheers
