PT Question

Please indulge me guys and gals, I have a question and would appreciate any experience you may have. I know some of you track your zeds and I would like your experience especially. My wife decided to play bumper cars in an intersection about 3 weeks ago and totaled her car. After getting her out of the hospital I started to find her a new car. Over my objections she wanted a Chrysler PT-Cruiser. Ya! I know a big slug, but she wanted it and loves it. I joined a Cruiser forum just to get some information about the car. To my surprise, I have found that there are guys modifying them to race. To race for heaven sakes I can not believe that. The one we have is just a stock automatic, it is nice to drive, but it is slower than hell and does not handle at all. :(

My question, you guys that track, do you know of anyone racing them and do they have any success? The guys on their forum seem quite serious about it. I would have asked on that forum but did not want to insult anyone there and piss them off. I already piss you guys off so nothing is lost asking here. Any response? :)

Drop enough money in something, and you can race it. I am sure there are aftermarket suspension/brake upgrades, and there are several turbo kits available. I know of at least 2 in this area that have tried to race me (and were killed)

I do know the PT is based on the same platform as the Dodge Neon. I bet most mods to engine and suspension might be common to the Neon.

Are you thinking of modding it?

I know someone that added a supercharger and they claim it added over 80 HP at the wheels... :o

The air force makes me run at the track...does that count?

Well you are probably as fast. No I am not going to mod it. I just thought it was laughable but did not want to stick it to anyone if in fact there is a bunch of guys tracking them. I know they are the same as a Neon as far as power plant and there are turbos etc for them. As top heavy as they are I would think they would tip very easily. Thanks for the input, and I guess nobody in a Zed is getting blown away by one.

I took a SCCA racing class up at Pacific Raceways a number of years ago and Proformance Racing School had a fleet of ACR Neons that were fully prepped for Showroom Stock class SCCA races. Kind of gutless compared to what a lot of the students (self included) were used to driving but surprisingly capable out on the track when pushed into the 9/10s range. These were limited in terms of what was allowed for mods given that they had to remain within class for SCCA racing but there are actually tons of mods that have been engineered by the SRT folks that actually push them into the almost silly range. Almost all of the drivetrain/suspension mods are bolt ons for the PT given that they share the chassis.

I think the PT body is going to be more than a little top heavy for serious track duty but the available mods will definitely put it within striking distance of a 3.0si in a straight line. Not quite sure why you might want to do something like that but there is no accounting for how far bad taste goes :D
