Protecting your soft-top before winter sets in

There are countless ways to protect your roadsters soft-top; a forum search will attest to this. This is my routine for protecting my Zed’s ragtop.

I don’t have a garage and therefore I’m at the mercy of the weather, so In terms of applying products today was perfect: dry and sunny. I don’t use a spray-on protector so I don’t have to worry about masking the car or waiting for a still day.

Firstly remove any bits from the fabric. Parcel tape is good for this, but a medium-hard brush will do the job too.

Next, wash with warm water mixed with a touch of car shampoo. I use one of these bath brushes (you can buy soft top cleaning products if you wish but I’ve always considered them an unnecessary expense).

Rinse off the soap with clean water and a sponge, dab excess water off with lint free cloth.

Then leave it to dry, and pray that the guy next door doesn’t fill the street with billowing grey smoke and ash from one of his weekly bonfires

When it’s completely dry apply the protector. I use BMW Genuine Car Care Soft Top/Roof Rain Water-Repellent Impregnating Agent 250ml (83 12 2 298 223). It costs £20 from my local BMW dealership.

Pour the whole bottle into 3 litres of warm water, give it a mix and then apply generously with a clean sponge (you actually wont use all 3 litres probably more like 1.5 so you could use just half the bottle if you can work out when you have poured half out). You should apply in the shade.

Leave soft-top to dry in the sun. Don’t be tempted to drop the roof even if it feels touch dry - give it all day.

It’s now ready for winter.

When the wet weather comes I will start using my half cover through the week, but when the soft-top does get caught in a downpour at weekends the rain will form droplets/beading on the surface of the fabric. :)

Timely and wise words.

I too have favoured AG for cleaning and protecting mine, but may switch to the BMW product to avoid either having to mask Windows and paintwork or spend a lot of time cleaning off the overspray from the windows and paintwork.

I'd be interested in getting a "beeding report" from Marlon in a couple of months' time.

Great write up.

I use on all convertible tops a tooth brush for all the hard to reach areas around the edges.

A good APC will also do the trick instead of buying these expensive "purpose made" products.

I have so much AG cleaner left over from previous treatment cycles that I just used that, and then spray on Megs stuff this time round. Worked a treat for me - but as you say, a PITA taping everything up.

Great write up

Many thanks for the write up. Good advice, I'm off to the local BMW dealership for the water repellant, have I missed all the nice weather though?

Nice write up. The OEM roof stuff gets good reviews.

I'd include lowering the roof a bit and treating the few cms of fabric you can't see below the rubber seal and body panels. Normally gets pretty botanical in there. Also clean under the rim of the roof.

Good point

Instead of parcel tape, I use the Ikea lint rollers - dead cheap and just pick up a few refils when my wife decides to go for her next "oooh Swedish" moment.

I personally wouldn't use car shampoo though due to the wax content. I use a clothes washing liquid, non-bio (as the cheap ones contain bleach), thoroughly rinse, and always wash the car afterwards to remove any residual salts.
