Pros and cons of getting a cat

Big Red Cat, thanks for the info on securing the garden, this may be something we end up looking into when we get around to getting our MC. I've learnt a lot so far from this thread, big thanks to you and everyone else for their input (as well as adorable pics of all the kitties). There is so much knowledge and experience on this forum

I secured my garden but they kept escaping. I was then more concerned about them not being able to get back in.

Yes, those that I have seen with the destroyed furniture were house cats only.

we have leather furniture, and the only bits that are scratched are where they have jumped down off of it. We had a man around to repair it, but it back to how it was now. we don't notice it though - certainly doesn't look ready for the dump

I don't get this whole keeping them in thing either, they love going outside

No problem. If you do decide to get a pedigree cat PM me & I will give you the names of good breeders to contact or help you check out any you find.
If you are interested in taking on an older MC rather than a kitten I can put you in touch with people who rehome cats in need. Cats left homeless after a relationship breaks down etc etc

I see too many dead animals in the gutter after being hit by cars to want to let any of our pets out on their own.
Not to mention the amount of scumbags who take pleasure in hurting animals for fun or the ones that get stolen and sold on.
A pet to me is part of the family and something to look after.
This is not to mention the fact that not all cats are street smart, some are extremely dopey and would not survive outside.
We had a persian that passed away a few years ago at about 16 years old, he could not have been let outside as he just didnt have any cat like abilities, couldnt climb, jump and his balance was extremely poor, he used to fall off the back of the chair while walking along it.

Yep - we have Casper - the dopey MC you've seen in my previous posts - We have had to cat proof the garden as far as possible.

Then we have Ghengis - Half Scottish Wild cat half Tazmanian devil - We can only cat proof the Garden to prevent dopey from getting out - but killer has to be able to come an go as he pleases !

maybe alot depends on where you live, we are in a quiet culdesac and the nearest really main road is a fair trek away. pretty sure Stripe doesn't go far. Fluffy also never seems too far away... Ours are moggies so not particularly valuable to anyone else either

its a dnager of having a cat. Zappy was run over in the summer unfortunately. we never found him but there is enough evidence that it was him from council reports and what a few of the neighbors said.

We live in a cul-de-sac with a quiet country lane to the side of the close. Maddox got run over there three years ago and broke his pelvis both sides. Luckily the person who hit him took him to the vets and they were able to pin him back together, unluckily he caught a flesh eating superbug from the operation and that nearly killed him. He had to have another emergency operation to cut away the infected tissue/muscle.




£2,500 through insurance, 3 long months of being caged in the living room, lots of love and attention and he's was completely back to normal jumping up 6 foot fences (he does sit a bit wonky now though )
We worry about him every day when he's out but could never keep him in all the time he would hate it and that's no life for a cat who loves hunting and chasing flies.

We are more so looking for an older cat, rather than kitten that needs rehoming (assuming when older they are trained and less likely to have accidents in the home?) and happy to travel a bit to meet it - drop me a PM if you know of any/know people that may know
