Pros and cons of getting a cat

Our tabby adopted us about 10 years ago when we moved into the current house. Just turned up one day and stayed. Bad tempered and demanding, but couldn't do without her now. Typical female!
We are lucky to have a great next door neighbour who sees that she is fed and watered when we take off for a few days. A cat flap with a microchip sensor is essential, ordinary cat flaps allow all the local moggies in during the night as we found out

1. they are for life
2. they need feeding
3. they need vet insurance
4. when you loose them its very upsetting

Cats are apparently the most popular pets in this country so I think that says it all 
We got our Dexy by choice from Cats Protection 2 years ago - he's 4 now . We live in the country and he must think he's in heaven compared to his early years - it is true though that they like to be in control at all times . Dexy likes to get me up around 6am each morning after a comfortable night's kip in his favourite chair or at the bottom of our bed - if I don't move he will miaow constantly until he get's his way - if during the day he wants to go out he will give the same performance until either myself or my wife opens the front door for him even though he could just as easily use his catflap in the back door - we have the flap opening only outwards as he cannot be trusted - when we first got him he kept bringing live mice in to the house and then losing interest in them 
We don't put him in a cattery when we're away - we have a like minded neighbour who has five cats who is more than happy to feed him - we reciprocate when they go away.
Like all pets their personalities can vary - Dexy is very needy for a cat and likes to be near us all the time - other cats can be the opposite - you'll never know till you get one but you'll have no regrets
They don't cost a lot to keep - a diet of dry food and Felix mixed together and water ( not milk ) - important though to insure them - we pay around £7 a month for life cover so as long as we keep paying we won't get stung as he gets older - cover up to a maximum of £4k for any one treatment with an excess of £75 which seems reasonable.

Personally I can't stand cats, hate the darn things.
Their expensive and a waste of natural resources.
If I'd had my way I would have ditched mine ages ago.
But it won't pass the MOT without one so I'm screwed.

He's just puked up his brekkie right in my wife's knitting bag - all over the new jumper she was putting the finishing touches to after several weeks of work
We have two,they are 15 years old now.I would try to avoid white cats ,only because they can have problems with their ears later in life.Our two have had to have their ears removed as a result of skin cancer.It's very common with white cats.Also do check if you are allergic to them,again quite common.You will need a good hoover,if you are very house proud then think carefully.

We live in a gated development away from the main road and I have a reasonable sized garden, hopefully this may be a bit safer overall.
My bf sponsors Cats Protection UK so we are more inclined to ideally get a rescue cat if the right one comes along. We are open to other options however - will see how things develop and possibly get in touch - thanks

They used to be show cats but are retired now. Harry was a stud-boy & had many beautiful kittens. He is in the lines of many British Maine Coon breeders.
I've had many cats over the years & have found that generally neutered males are the daftest & friendliest. They are the least likely to wander if they have the snip early.
They all have very different personalities though. My two youngest boys are Siberians & half-brothers. They are both gorgeous but quite different even though they have had the same up-bringing. They are both show cats but more difficult to show than Maine Coons as they are not as laid back.

Love cats and up until 6 days ago had 4, one moggy, two ragdolls and our little baby maine coon.
Sadly our baby Bo died on Sunday morning not even 1 year old with a suspected heart attack.
We are absolutely heartbroken.
She was a lovely cat and was starting to become the boss of the house and almost bigger than her two big ragdoll brothers.
If getting a maine coon make sure the parents have been tested for HCM as they can carry a gene which causes heart disease.
Also be prepared for lots of fun and wet floors as they love to play with water.

Love this thread - we're planning on getting cats in the next couple of months, hopefully a pair of kittens from the same litter. All of our pets when I was a kid were rescued animals. We had a long haired Persian blue that my Dad found curled into a freezing ball on our back doorstep, so small she fit in his hand. The first thing the vet had to do to the poor wee thing was shave all her fur off, she was so matted. We had her for years though, completely batshit crazy and loved nothing more than winding up the dog. The RSPCA and Battersea both have outposts near us, so hopefully with some patience a pair will come up.
