Propshaft centre bearing

Got a warbling whine at 1400rpm in second gear. Gearbox has been striped and inspected, all perfect. New DMF/clutch cover/clutch plate/release bearing. Centre mount is just the next thing on the list......

Nightmare! How much has all that cost? I would have thought if it was a bearing you would be getting the noise in every gear but just at different revs :?

If the gearbox has been stripped and inspected, surely they looked at the centermount, propshaft itself and the diff?
IT would be strange to look for such a specific problem in a component that takes 6-8hours work (if not more) and not spare the 30min to look at the other parts?

BTW to look for a whine (certainly at such a low speed) you dont need to remove the propshaft center bearing. You need to listen with a stethoscope on the various components where the whine is coming from.
Otherwise your list will become a very expensive list.

I had the box removed by my local indy and sent to a specialist for stripping and analysis £495 including transport. They said it was perfect (81,000 miles) and unmarked. They would be happy to sell it with a 12 month guarantee.
I replaced the DMF as it had play in rotation and laterally, along with a full clutch kit all by LUK £800 fitted including the removal and refitting of the box.
The centre bearing was examined, nothing there you can feel or see but of course the pressure you can apply is nothing compared to what the engine puts it through.
The gearbox guys listened to the recording and they said centre bearing, apparently the harmonics in the drive chain change all the time as a result in engine speed, gear selected, road speed etc so many variables and the whine was only ocurring across a range of around 150 revs 1400 - 1500ish. As a result it can only happen in one gear.
Its a lot better with the new clutch and DMF but still not as quiet as I would like.
First step is to drain the oil hot and check it for contaminants, don't believe the sealed for life yarn, no engineer would back that up as a good idea.. Then I would in hindsight change the centre bearing regardless, not expensive. Then clutch/DMF if the whine is still there and you are sure its not the diff.
NOTE - DON'T LET THE MECHANIC RUN THE CAR IN GEAR. IF THE WHEELS ARE NOT ON A ROLLER AND ARE FREE SPINNING IN THE AIR IT CAUSES ALL SORTS OF PROBLEMS AND ERRORS. SO MUCH SO THEY HAD TO DO A HARD RESET TO BRING MY CAR BACK TO LIFE....
