prop shaft gone at 42k miles????

ok guys, heres what they said:

The rear joint that mounts to the differential is starting to seize, hence under load the prop starts to vibrate and make the car shake.

On the prop shaft you can replace the front and centre joints but not the rear joint, the prop shaft will require replacing before we can complete any further testing.

to be fair to them they are asking for a goodwill gesture from bmw and are giving me a hire car. its on back order and will take 6 days to get here. they said they wouldnt have a problem with me getting the prop refurbed. but i did speak to another garage who specialse in BMW and he said that refurbing that end of the prop has potential issues and that he wouldnt reccomend it.

so - what do we think??

The situation you desribe sounds like the seal/s on one end of the prop have failed allowing water in that has rusted the needle rollers leading to premature failure.

If you can get a new prop out of BMW then great. If not then I'd speak to a prop company in the area and get their opinion given all the information you have to hand. They will tell you if and how much it can be done for.

Make a judgement and decision then from a point of knowledge

right guys. things have happened!

i happy to say that bmw have offered to pay for the prop shaft leaving me with the fitting bill, which is £271.51 .

im very happy with that and would rather have the complete new unit than refurb the old one, and i think the costs would be similar now anyway once i had paid bmw for taking off and putting the old one back on, taking it somewhere and having them remove, refurb and refit.

i really appreciate your advice and help , and hey, weve all learned something about prop shafts adn Transmission Shafts and half shafts. well, i have anyways!

thanks again. if anyone needs computer support, let me know and i'll help you out remotely. www.247computerdoctor.com
