What about a Z3...? There should be some great kits available and still reliable. If not, I would also go for an old 3-series: easy to work on and they have a certain charm... Or maybe a Porsche 944?

For example: :-)

Kit car. No, don't laugh, I'm serious. For your money you can get some really intersting machinery, and insurance/running costs are very low. Take a look through the kit car section of the PistonHeads adverts.

I agree, not a bad idea if you are looking for a car to work on... But what kit car would you recommend then?

get a 406 coupe , can pocket the v6 3.0 for around 1.5-2k with decent miles on them aswell

Depends what sort of thing you'd like - performance or style, or both. Take your time as some nice things come up occasionally. Not saying I'd go for any of these, but here are examples of the different type of things. Also remember that prices tend to be plucked out of thin air - there's no Glass's guide - so you can offer much less than asking price, especially as we go into winter and people want to get shot.

306 Gti-6 - there are loads of body kits for them. Checkout ecosse as well as Dimma etc

Corrado? Go euro with 15s and a big drop? I had a VR6 and it was fantastic. Great engine, excellent handling.

MX5? Cheap to buy. Great to drive. Loads of mods available

After viewing an ep of Wheeler Dealers the one where they restored a Lancia Delta Integrale..... reminded me just how good this car still is. And worthy of a project. Bet not many about tho which means spares are costly
