I have seen it in the past where a painter mixes paint and lacquer so the paint becomes translucent and you can still see the carbon weave, yet from a few foot away it looks to be colour coded.

I saw this a few years ago on a Ducati.
From what the guy that owned it said it was a red candy lacquer that was sprayed over the carbon panels, looked really good and different.

An entire tub of seam sealer & 3.5 litres of stone chip.... that was a fun weekend.
