Project car. Guess what it is.

As some of you know, a couple of months ago I found what I thought would be a nice little weekend project car, the Lotus Excel. It looked ok, drove ok, but it had an overheating problem that the dealer couldn’t address.
It was one of my acceptance criteria that they fix it before I committed to buying it. They couldnt fix it, so I didn’t buy it.

I remember seeing the current car I’ve got lined up parked in the corner of a little Alfa dealership on the edge of the Vecht canal not far from me while I was out on a bikeride about a year ago.
It was looking very forlorn and down on its’ luck and I remember thinking to myself ‘what a shame, somebody must have loved that once. Doesn’t deserve to be in this state.’

That was then.

I was out for a drive this afternoon and with the itch for a project car still there I decided to divert past that garage and see if they still had it.
Got there, parked up, but couldnt see it.
Asked the guy and he said ‘oh yeah, it’s parked up round the back’.
Kool and the Gang! I thought to myself and followed the dude to the back courtyard whereupon said motor was sat there, still languishing in it’s cobwebs and mildew.

Its the garage owners’ car apparently and the mechanic rang him to see if he was open to offers.
Brief conversation later and we have an agreement in principle that if it turns over, runs, drives and there’s no significant mechanical issues then I’d make him an offer.

It’s lovely though. I’ve got that ‘silly fool falling in love’ giddy gideon feeling!
The paint and interior are a bit rough but that’s fne, exactly what I’m looking for. There’s no rust, rot or accident damage as far as I could see but I’ll make sure of that later in to the negotiations. With a bit of tlc and fettling it would make a way better project than the Excel.

We couldnt get it to run sadly. Could hear the fuel pump and startermotor whirring over but it just wouldnt make contact and crank the engine over. We rocked it to see if there was movement at the fan and there was, so not an engine seizure. Mechanic told me they had it running a couple of months ago. It idles badly however. That’s for later.

Ok, enough waffle from me. Here’s a foto.
10 points and a creamcake to the first smartypants to guess what it is.
Twin air intakes so that should give you a clue to beast that lurks within the enginebay

Hah! We have a winner!
Well done. Thought the guesses might have gone on a bit longer.
I’ve eaten the creamcake, so you’ll have to make do with the 10 points.

A few more photos.
Most importantly, and this is why it would make a fantastic project car, is that it has a manual gearbox. Super rare!

WTF!!!!

A manual 928... they’ve just suddenly rocketed up in value!!! & if u stole it money wise from a car trader that’s unbelievable!!!

Not quite my thing, though they’ve suddenly become the new jewel... congrats, worse case you’ll still turn a profit if have to sell on

Yeah. Manual. Rare as Hens teef!
I'm trying to be a bit more conservative in my outlook with this one. There's got to be a reason, a hidden demon as to why it's been neglected and I suspect it's hiding something.
Time will tell.
Next viewing next weekend when they promised to have it running for me and hopefully a little bazz up and down the canal.
Watch this space....

Er... now u have advertised it on the web... you’ve just activated a whole lot of sleepers who will be hunting through old adverts for the address... plus u have just reminded a trader about a car he will deffo know about its worth. If it’s a runner he’ll just make a tidy profit by activating his connections, as people are hunting for these barn finds.

U know it will have some issues & personally I’d rather buy a ‘non-runner’ at a knock down price, change the oil before trying to get it going... coz they will just get it to run... so can only suggest hook a car trailer up tomorrow, cash in the pocket & buy ‘as is’

As I said, if u have issues... shifting afterwards will be easy please now

Lovin' ur enthusiasm Jembo but I'm not getting into a tizzy about this one.

If someone sweeps in under me and snatches it away then fair do's. I'll be acquiring this one according to my own terms and nobody else's. It's been sitting around at that dealer for 3 years! I'm sure I'm not the only one who's expressed interest in it previously.
The seller alluded to the recent hotting-up of the market and I know he will be factoring this in to any deal we might enter into. He gave a figure for which he paid for it as it came in a job lot of 3 cars.

I told him I wasn't interested in purchasing 3 cars or the financial equivalent and would be offering him way less than what he initially invested and he was ok with that.

I'm not looking to flip something within a hot market to make a quick profit and by the same token I'm not interested in buying a moneypit either. This is intended to be a nice, relatively straightforward weekend project car.
Go slowly, go cautiously is my philosophy.

Happy to wait until what happens next weekend and I've set the deal/acceptance criteria as with the Excel.

Now that's a nice bit of kit Chris, I do like these. That is such a sexy shape and the V8 sound track to boot, hope it works out for you

None of any of those from me - just massive respect!

I've always admired 911s but never really wanted one, but a manual 928 - Yes please!

I hope you manage to get this one.

Thx Tidylar.
Hope it doesn't turn out to be a damp squib.
Got some collaborators and friends lined up to assist with technical stuff.
Gotta hope for the best....

Lovely cars when they're all up together and if you get it at the right price then worth buying almost whatever the condition. So weirdly, quite a "safe" buy. Good luck with the negotiations!! Porsche parts will of course be horribly expensive and I expect most of the electrics to be u/s. After 3 years quite likely to have wiring and plastic & rubber parts chewed through by mice and all the other rust & seized parts through lack of use.

But if you can bring it back to life, massive satisfaction and a glorious beast to drive. Never owned one but worked for someone who did. It was some car!! :driving:

Update.

So a week later and it lives!
The mechanic got it running after initially suspecting the starter motor wasn't engaging properly. Turns out it was just his booster battery was knackered as they rigged up the garage runabout to it after I left last week and got it started.
In any case, it sounds fantastic. Creamy smooth. No ticks, knocks, wobbles or vibrations. No oil or coolant drippage. No smoke from the exhauast although it did smell like it was running a bit rich. That's maybe to be expected as it's been sat so long. It was low on coolant too which may have influenced some running paramenters.

Unfortunately they had a little accident with a trailer bashing into the back of it and smashing the rear driverside light cluster and chafing the bumper. Oh dear. The cluster on the other side is all cracked too so maybe an opportunity for an upgrade of some sort. Bit of a *kof* clusterf@ck, but perhaps an extra bargaining chip for me.

I was amazed to see both pop-up headlights working as well as the airconditioning. Superplusbonus! :o

Next step is to throw some figures into a hat and see if we can get the ball rolling on a good price for both of us. Any suggestions on values as a running and (maybe driving) fixer-upper 928S?

Pending first stage negotiations, the next step will be to get it up in the air to have a poke around underneath, check the brakes, suspension, driveline and see if it's good for the road....and get it out on the road for test drive.
That'll be in 2 weeks time.....

Ouch!

Sounds good Chris.
WhyTF do they rev the nuts out of a cold engine, it's been sat all this time and the monkey has to blast it. Ed China used to do this too.
Hope it all goes well for you
