AFAIK they are all Mk4, certainly my 2003 is.

If it's a DVD it certainly is as the Mk3 was a CD based system

Guys - I understand, what and why of this, but we can't have links, references, etc. to illegal downloads, copies of maps, etc. on the site, else we'll be jumped on and closed down.

Please don't post such requests or discussion on the board, else the forum will have problems

Who cares when BMW charge you approx £2000 for a 3rd world SatNav unit without the basic capabilities of a £99 TomTom. They then shaft you for £250 twice a year for map updates (or £99 twice a year if you surrender your old map DVD).

BMW are taking the Michael out of their customers - & they know it. :tumbleweed:

Who cares? Well aside from the fact the owner of this forum is nothing to do with BMW - but would be the one in trouble.

Sorry - so delete my post - end of story. However, I am correct in my views. The BMW "Professional" SatNav is absolutely shocking by todays standards. It is overpriced by approx £1800 without the capabilities of a basic £99 Garmin/TomTom unit. It is part of the car so when you sell your motor you lose your £2000 (no great loss technically!).

If you are a technophile AND know what you are doing, you can add a UK/European Speed Camera database to a new BMW Map DVD (Go to http\\www.X5World.com to find out how to do it - The best BMW SatNav site in the world IMHO). However, that is virtually worthless as when you add these POI's (Points of Interest) to your map DVD they only come up as visual indications -No Audio warnings. That in itself raises safety issues as you are constantly watching the SatNav - & NOT the road....

Yes, the unit looks impressive when it swivels up from the dash but as A modern SatNav it is absolute C**P.

Look at it this way: Buy a discounted TomTom from Halfrauds for £99. Download the "TomTom Home" application to your PC. You then get DAILY map updates, Any amount of amusing Voices, the ability to add the "PocketGPSWorld" worldwide Speed Camera database with audible warnings at a distance in yards set by YOU. A TomTom can be used in ANY family car & can be taken abroad to use in a hire car. A no-brainer really..... :headbang:

I like the screen, not for the Nav, but for the audio features and better setup menus.

The Nav is nicely integrated, but lacking in features.

Banus333 Thanks you for the input and information on modding maps. All I ask is that discussion is kept to doing it on genuine maps purchased and sourced from BMW authorised suppliers.

As an aside I agree with many of your points about the quality of the mapping per se, for the price charged by BMW, but it's a consumer choice to buy it or leave if off the options list. You are also paying for the integration and not just the generic Tom Tom, but each to their own.

(Incedentally cameras can be set to give an audible warning, not just visual)
