Problems with my 525d

si-forks

Veteran
So my old 2003 525d which has served me problem free for the last 7 years and has 145000k has now developed starting fault
Came to start the car, put the key in the ignition i just get click click, came back later and started straight away ,all was fine for a week ,then it did it again.
I assumed it was a battery problem so i bought a new battery fitted it car has been fine for 2 weeks.
Monday morning started doing it again turn the ignition click click, waited a few minutes try again car starting fine !! again wednesday morning the same !!!!! the car doesn't struggle to start when it does start
anybody have an idea what this could be i've read it could be the ignition barrel or starter motor problems
Any help would be greatly appreciated cheapest option first
Thanks

I had it on my old 7 series where the immobiliser in the key prevented it from starting (sometimes).

Do you have another key?

I would put money on the immobiliser transmitter from the key. Try the other key for a while.

Well so far so good changed the key on wednesday cars been fine let's hope that's all it is

Bump
So swopped the keys over as pvr recommend and has been fine for a month or so but it now started again put the key in, the car just goes dead !! no ignition, no central locking, nothing ,leave it for a while anything working again . Did a google search everything points to a worn ignition barrel, easy to swap out so bought one from bmw £60 ,and changed it over car is still dead ignition seems to just come on when it feels like it can't even lock the doors manually with the key anybody got any ideas battery brand new

Alternator ? Similar symptoms to my wife's car last year, bought a new battery and it died too, turned out it was the alternator.

The battery is 2 months old if I can get it going will check it out, but when the ignition does come on the car starts with no problems

This is a common problem that is actually associated with the starter motor, sounds strange but the dust from the slowly disintegrating dual mass causes the motors to stick. Literally leaving it a whole and the dust dries out and it can start without a problem.

I had the same on a mondeo diesel and changed the starter and the problem never re-occurred.

:(

So now the alarm is going off randomly with the car unlocked except the boot so I can't get to the battery :?
Could it be an earth !

Car fixed turned out to be a dodgy positive terminal on the battery,GFS swopped it for another battery as it was new no problems at all now:lol:
