Problems contacting member ‘john-e89’

Morning all,

I’ve been trying to get hold of ‘john-e89’ through the forum for a while with no joy unfortunately.

Can anyone help, or even link him to this thread?

Thanks!

Tried lots to be honest. Emails, calls, texts, forum. Didn’t want to plaster all over here but where do you go next…

Tried to keep this out of the public domain but after months of failed contact with @john-e89, maybe now is the time to mention here, as I’m a loss what to do next.

Myself and @MattYorkshire purchased PVR’s z4 in Jan 2025 and sold it to @john-e89 in April.

The sale was really smooth and John was a nice guy. Perfect sale. At the time, my private registration plate (B11 AYX) was on the car. As John had travelled, he wanted the car the same day so it was agreed that when he got the new V5, he would transfer the plate back into my name. This was a 21st birthday present from parents over 15 years ago.

Since John drove away in the car in April, he’s failed to return any call, reply to any text and respond to all emails. We even supplied the original registration plates in the boot so it was easy to swap!

After some digging, we noticed yesterday that he put a for sale advert on the forum in July and the car was sold.

So as it stands, despite a really clear agreement made in April when John bought the car, we are still without the private plate that has sentimental value… means absolutely sod all to anyone else!

I was hoping by trying to reach John on this forum (given he’s an active member) he’d return our messages. But, still no replies.

This explains my separate thread about now looking for the new owner.

Well that’s not good is it?
Hopefully a misunderstanding that can be cleared up.
Given that it takes all of five minutes to remove the reg online, and you had the plates ready to go back on, it does seem a little remiss that you didn’t do that and ask John just to wait that little extra.
Why didn’t you remove the reg as soon as you knew you needed to sell it?

I am not condoning any alleged failures on John’s part, but it does seem a little odd you weren’t prepared?

We tried to do that when we prepared the car for sale (we’ve sold many cars, we get it) but on this occasion the DVLA needed us to get in touch rather than do it through the online system. For what reason, I have no idea. Could have been because the plate hadn’t been on the car long. It was a weekend too.

Given that the car needed taking that day, we put our trust in John that he would transfer it over. In hindsight, this was probably naive but like I say, he’s a really nice guy so we had no concerns.

I really didn’t want this becoming public, I just want some contact. At the point he put the car up for sale, I would have expected some contact then. I even said I’d pay the £100! I still will. I just need it back.

Sounds a bit odd all round?
Did some digging and it seems the person who expressed interest in it (@jaybeetooblue) at the time he sold it, suddenly popped up again yesterday to try to get in touch with John as well?

Not getting involved in this specific case however I’ve had one instance like yours when selling a car the private plate couldn’t be done online and had to cal them to discuss.

It happens from time to time as you say

The down side is that when selling the car electronically you waive all rights to the reg plate so are reliant on the purchaser doing what’s agreed…

Agree and thanks for reply. On the day, we had no doubt. He is a really nice bloke and hung around for a while to chat about all sorts. Family etc.

We even commented that we were pleased the car was going to a good guy as we didn’t really want to get rid of it, but we had a new work car coming.

Well I've never seen that before! Lesson learned for me then: if I want to retain a private plate I will make sure it is all sorted before I offer the car for sale. A pertinent reminder as we will be getting rid of the stupidly gargantuan barge that is the 520 Tourer soon, and the plate needs to come off that!

Perhaps this new information will give John the chance to get that reg back to you

Had exactly the same issue when I sold my first E89 on the forum.

I let it go to a forum member with the private reg still on it to not hold up the sale - never thought it would be an issue but I never saw the reg again and the member has long since stopped frequenting the forum.

Lesson learned 😡

Sorry to hear that. I think we try give benefit of the doubt when it’s a forum member. It’s not selling on eBay. But like you say, a lesson learned sadly.

Really hoping so. If John has genuinely forgotten then I understand (I’m a reasonable person!) but I would really appreciate the contact to locate the new owner so I can try get it back. It’s something that means a lot and I wanted to pass it to my daughter.
