problems around 3k RPMs??

I have been very irritated with something-when driving NORMAL, in 2nd gear and holding the throttle down moderately, when I hit 3k RPM I get this weird stutter, or jumpiness? It happens in 2nd and 3rd, right around the same RPM's (3-3.5k) and then smooths out. Now if I drive it hard, full throttle, this anomolie does not occur! But like I said, if I hold the throttle down about 1/4 to 1/2 and hold it steady, when I hit the certain point the car jumps and stutters briefly. What is going on? ANy hlep is GREATLY appreciated!!!

BTW-ONLY HAPPENS WHEN SPORT BUTTON IS ON!!!!

First...Welcome To The Forum...
Sounds like a service call to the dealer.
Are you still under warranty?

skittlz74, Welcome to the 4um!

Sounds like a computer glitch. Dealer can fix. Hope your under warranty still.

Have you introduced yourself in the Newbie's section yet???

Are you sure it's not your foot moving? With the sport button on, she's very sensitive to throttle movements. At around 3k you're hitting the powerband and the acceleration can cause minor foot movements. Try bracing the side of your foot on the transmission tunnel to steady it and see if it still occurs.

yeah i have CPO so i am covered, just curious to see if anyone else has experienced!!

I will post in the Newbie's section now!!

if your still under warranty, goto ur dealer. if not, a dyno tune might show what is going on aswell. There are quite a lot of things that may effect this

trust me my foot is not moving:) i actually got a small piece of wood and was using it as a pedal stop at about 1/2 throttle!

Yep have the same problem too... in fact this was a common problem with the early Z4s (2003-2004 and perhaps some early 2005) before bmw fixed it... There were lots of posts on the old z4um forum and one guy in fact name his car "Sergio" because of the frequent surging

I get it too with the sports button engaged ans also when I use manual steptronic mode and I accelerate moderately to high..

The guy with the "sergio" car managed to eventually fix it by having his DME flashed by BMW (that's after BMW changed practically everything else in the engine to find the problem). It seems the new engine management software may address this problem..

I'm planning to do the same shortly (although out of warranty) so would appreciate if you could let us know if DME flash fixes your problem...

awesome response my friend! thanks so much for the info:) i will schedule an appointment to try to get this fixed!

Howdy, I had the Z4 2.5 named Surgio. Fixed with a computer re-flash by the dealer. It was so annoying. Has been good since the fix last November. Regards, Zinkster

Just an update for everyone..just like the poster I also had engine surging issue with sport button or manual steptronic use under hard acceleration.

Finally had my DME flashed today by my independent BMW mechanic for my 2003 3.0i and it seems it has fixed my engine surging problems! Big thanks to Zinkster and his car "Surgio" who originally brought this fix to my attention on the old Z4um forums!

Also had my bonnet alarm sensor replaced due to false alarms and the mechanic said the tilt sensor was also reporting some faults but at AU$600 to replace it, suggested I'd wait and see if it truly is affected as well.

Alright folks, problem solved! The software update is absolutely the way to go! The car feels better than new. Great accelaeration, throttle response is like night and day, and midrange pulls much nicer! I highly recommend this upgrade. Best $150 I have spent on the Z to date:)

I have this exact problem except mine occurs without the sport button on!

Does anyone know of an independent that will be able to upgrade my software in the Midlands (UK)..

Thanks

Alex

Mine does it too (2003 - 3.0), not noticed it previously but if you are on light throttle load and take the revs through 3k-3.5k it bucks and takes off like its arse is on fire.

If you are using more throttle it does not happen... very odd!

Right, my MOT is being done Monday and I have requested and finally got their agreement to flash it with the latest DME programming... hope it works..... actually I hope they know what they are doing! :headbang:
