Problem with wipers

I had a problem with my wipers smearing on the windscreen when it rained and giving the wipers and windscreen a proper clean didn’t make any difference so assumed I needed new wipers. But after getting new OEM ones the problem has not been totally eradicated – the LHS wiper is still smearing across the whole blade and on the RHS there are 2 fine spots on the blade that is not clearing which leaves 2 fine arcs on the screen on the downward motion only.

Any suggestions on what I could do to get ride of this?

I’ve also put Rain X on the screen which I thought would help but it hasn’t.

Cheers
Jay

For the RHS one, check your windscreen for any small chips along the wipers travel where the streaks are. A small chip could nip off that part of the rubber.

As for the left one, mine sometimes streaks due to the screen's curvature (need lots of water to get it streak free). Maybe try different blades like flexible/aero ones. They always wiped much better on my previous cars.

Thanks Ed. I dont think the RHS is caused by a chip on the windscreen as the streak only occurs on the downward motion. I'll have a check anyway.

I have the same problem, i'm going to try changing windscreen wash as the stuff bmw put in the car is rubbish.

I might try that as well. Currently use the standard stuff from Halfords.

mine's the same. Needs loads of water to work properly. My wife's mx5 is exactly the same, I wonder if it has anything to do with the shape of the screen and the relative shortness of the arms/blades compared to "normal" cars.

Just fitted the new style flat blades (available on 'e' bay) - a world of difference!

Was it an ebay shop, are there more available?

A link would be great!!!

Try degreasing the screen and blades with some mr muscle window cleaner/meguires window cleaner/vinegar and newspaper. Also gently clean the rubber blades and if they are older than a year consider getting some new blades from BMW (the bosch ones dont fit properly and not convinced by flat blades).

I'm a bit OCD about cleaning my screen and blades and have silent streak free wipers, I would avoid rain-X as it can create a funky haze/blooming affect on lights when driving at night.
