Hi,
i've had my Z4 E85 (2003) for a few days now, i noticed quite early that i had a strange king of echo to the music (really noticeable with a basic drum beat for example), so i tried playing around with the settings, i put all the fade to the rear, and i had no sound coming from the speakers behing the seats at all...
I've got the buisness cd with 6 cd changer... not sure how many speakers though..
It's really starting to bug me as the sound quality is rather poor !
what can it be ? if they've died, can they be replaced easy enough with some aftermarket ones ?

Thanks
Olly

1. Remove your amp from the trunk, open it up, is there any corrosion anywhere? If yes, theres your problem.

2. Slide your seat forward, remove the lower & upper rear speaker covers, turn on tge music, do the speakers work?
If not, pull out one speaker, and give it a battery test. Take the positive terminal off your battery, attach to one side of the speaker, then take the negative battery terminal, and simply tap it quickly to the other side of the speaker terminal.
If your speaker "pops" or "thumps" it means your speaker is fine, and most likely you have a wiring issue, or a faulty amp.

Very common problem to have a faulty Z4 amp. But hey, its only 1400$ from bmw :)

Many threads on this, search!

Do you have 4 speaker grilles behined the seats?

If you have the carver DSP system it could have the EQ setting set to church which would explain the echo!

Have a look what system you hvae and see if you have an amp (under boot carpet next to battery)

Right, i've just had a better look at all of that..
So it would seem that i have the 10 speaker system (2x foot well, 2x tweeters, 2x door cards, 4x behind the seats)

I tried putting all the fade to the rear again with the seats fully forward to get my head behind the seats, and the bottom big speakers are not working... all the rest seem to be fine, even the one's in the foot well's ! I had a look for the amp, but wasn't really sure what i was looking for... In the battery box there is a black box closest to the rear bumper, is that it ?

I don't think i have the DSP system as when looking in the settings all i can modify is "bass", "treble", "fade", "balance"...

Sorry i'm a bit of a noob !

This morning i went out as it's finally stopped raining to have a little look at my amp....
I took it out and opened it up, and it stank of burnt electrics ! The damage is quite visible in the photo...

This is the sticker on my amp :

From the sticker it would seem i do have DSP ? But on my radio (unless i'm being really dumb), i dont have the EQ settings that others do...

What are my options ? is it easy to replace the amp with an after market one ? or should i just forget about those subs ? I've done a fair bit of research on the forum and it seems quite complex to change the amp unless you know what you're doing

Any help is very appreciated as i'm rubbish with audio :(
