Problem with bolt holding brake carrier on

17mm bolt just refuses to budge.
Soaked it in penetrating fluid and still no movement.

Any suggestions?

Impact torque wrench. Best investment as it won’t be the last one you will come across and less change of damage than a long breaker bar

I don't think there would be space behind the hub to get an impact wrench in. I have a fear that I may have started to round one of the heads.
Are those nut remover extraction sockets any good?

If you turn the steering wheel all the way there as plenty of room. A long breaker bar is a better option in my opinion unless you have one of the really good impact guns (which i do and it still wouldn't budge it).

I bought one of these recently as I needed something hefty to get a drive sprocket nut off my bike. It's a beast and will undo anything. Or snap the bolt.
3/4" drive! :o

Its the rear wheel .......

A good six sided socket for full contact on the bolt head, none of those 12 point things as they will round the corners off if it's playing hard to get. 1/2 inch drive breaker bar or T bar and a suitable extension.
It's counterintuitive, but don't forget to tighten the bolt a touch first to break the hold before undoing it.

I got this 300nm one that does fit, I needed it to remove the abs sensor

Don't want to be supercilious but you shouldn't use chrome vanadium sockets with impact wrenches or drivers. They can shatter.

I don’t even know why that was on there as I never used that as I needed the smallest Allen key for the abs sensor. Followed by the removal bits as it failed anyway.

Thanks for the heads-up though, wasn’t aware

The gentle application of some heat with one of these before using a decent 6 sided socket and breaker bar  MappGas_TorchImage_1024x1024.jpg

Last but not least, get in there with a hammer or hammer and parallel punch. Not so hard as to cause damage but attack the junction between the bolt and housing from all directions, combine that with all of the above and you should get a result. If that fails you can contact the Samaritans on 116 123. Good luck.

I think I should also buy a lottery ticket. I think there’s a higher chance of success!

Appreciate all the suggestions. The car is at BMW for a service on Tuesday. I could be tempted to see if they can do something, but I am not sure if I’ll have the same problem on the other 7 bolts.
I could see if they would put the new pads and discs on, but I’d prefer to do it…….

Aren’t they 16mm?

Check but I wouldn’t want you to round off by using a 17
RealOEM says it’s a M10 which appears to be 16mm.
I need to check my sockets to see which one I was using. I was sure it’s 17mm but could be wrong. Could well explain why it was starting to round them.
Good call out!! Thanks.

Realoem shows front bolts are M12x1.5x32
Rears are M10x26.5
If yours are rounded then invest in a set of these

Standard M10 bolts are 17mm head and M12 are 19 but BMW use 16 and 18mm headed bolts on most components (particularly suspension.)
