Problem with a car brought from a dealer..

Hey guys,

I purchased a 2004 3.0 Z4 roadster a couple of weeks ago from a dealer, and now I'm having problems with the dealer and a fault that has occured. I am going to speak to trading standards on Monday and see if they have any advice, but thought I'd post up on here to see if I get any information in the mean time!

Right, so as I said, I purchased a Z4 from a dealer several weeks back. I part exchanged my old car in and was happy with the deal. However 4 days after buying the car the airbag light came on, so I contacted the dealer asking if he would fix it. He replied saying "how about the ABS light that came on, on your part ex car?", now when I dropped the car off, there were no ABS lights on the dash (although it had been playing up at times before) and he accepted the car. Although he did not check the car himself so I can't prove the ABS light was off when I dropped it off, but as far as I understand this is his problem as he didn't check? He just asked if any lights were on and I told him "no" as there was not at the time.

I managed to get the Z4 into a specialist to have the fault codes read, turns out in needs a new control unit. If it was a cheap fix I would have just paid and let it go, however with the cost of replacement at several hundred pounts I want to pursue it further.

Do I have any right to get him to pay to fix the airbag fault on the Z4 in these circumstances?

Hope that all makes sence! I know trading standards will be in a better position to give advice but any pointers would be appreciated!

if you brought it from a trader its 3 months by law.be firm but fair. this is his problem not yours make him sort it or take legal advice

That's a real shame... don't let it spoil your ownership. You've got a great car in the 3.0.

Agree completely with kevdix. Good luck !

Its an old trader trick to make you feel guilty and not to bother them again..

A sort of "tit fot tat" if you will..

There will be no ABS light on,he is just trying to fob you off.. Turn up at the door with your Z4,and ask for it to be fixed.. You do have to give the trader chance to repair the car at his cost,so be prepared to leave it with him.

I would take it back.... you have nothing to loose and yes you should have received a warranty of some type even if its only a 90day one.

You will find a lot of information and options available to you on the website below - just follow the links :

Cheers guys, I have done quite a lot of reading this morning on the issue, so will keep pursuing him. I will let you know the outcome.

On a lighter note, I will get the car cleaned and get some pictures up later today!

Well the car is going to be repaired, so result! However when on the way to drop it off the cd changer got stuck swapping CDs and won't eject. Something else to fix when I get it back lol. Not getting off to the best start here!

I had the same issue on my car. BMW told me it needed a new controller unit and was going to cost £400! I declined. In the end, I replaced my battery, reset the airbag light and it never came on again. BMW obviously know what they are talking about then :x

Anyway, it doesn't matter what goes wrong with the car you traded. He accepted it. He provides a warranty, not you.

Name and shame......

This was sycamore BMW in Peterborough. They were insistent that it was the airbag controller unit. Then a few days later my battery failed on a cold morning. It was a ropey battery causing the problems all along. Needless to say I haven't taken it back there since!

Italian exotica for instance are well known for needing the occasional battery reset (disconnect the battery for 20 mins) to clear all sorts of electronic faults. No different to powering off your phone or pc when something doesn't work. :D

Btw OP, make sure the dealer hasn't disconnected the airbag warning light when you get the car back.........
