Pro std. audio - USB "distortion" and useless AuxIn?

I've noticed when playing music off USB some sort of distortion- it's usually on bassier parts and sounds like something maybe vibrating in a speaker, but using the fader and balance controls I can move the sound around but the problem remains. It's a sort of high pitched "tinkle" on bass notes.
Because it didn't go away for a specific speaker (or at lower volumes) I wondered if it was actually more of a problem in the DAC (however the USB stuff is read). So I thought I'd try the same music off my phone via the Aux In to see if the same thing happened (as I've never heard it via the radio either). But the Aux in just presents me with a pretty loud hiss (like a blank cassette player turned up) and the music incredibly quietly in the background (even with the phone at full volume). While I don't care about the aux in particularly, it makes testing my theory harder. I'll need to burn a CD next!

Anyone seen either of these problems before? This is non-iDrive standard audio with Professional HU.

Hmm, I might try a CD, and rip it to WAV as well, see if I can pinpoint where the problem lies. Cheers

Tried a (real, as in purchased) CD, and I get the same sort of noise... so I guess it's not just the USB interface. Hmm
