As a newbie my Avatar size is restricted to 150 x 500 pixels. I do notice that other members have larger (and stunning) Avatars. Is this a perk of being an old sweat?

'Avatar' is the picture that goes under your user name and has a small dimensions limit.

'Signature' is what goes under your posts and has different limits.
