Hey guys!

I've got a cherished plate coming for the Z. Ordered and paid for it yesterday and they said they'd send some kind of form out straight away. So it might be there when I get home from work or maybe tomorrow. I'm just wondering really when should I expect to have the plate on my car? Is there any chance it can be on by Sunday? How long did it take for yours? Just that the Z is getting photographed on Sunday and i'd love her to have her new plate on then...

Get the plates made up anyway and stick em on for the photo's

I took the transfer form to the local DVLA office and they did everything on the spot - new tax disc and MOT certificate - new V5 follows in the post. So as long as you go in person you'll be good to go as soon as you have the plates.

Hiya Lucy, the form they refer to is a V750 document, (I bought a non dating plate last week as it happens)

You have to fill this doc with info re the current reg of the car, when the tax disc expires etc and send it along with the vehicles V5 to the DVLA (tax disc has to go because they then send you a new one with the new reg on it)..

The doc then states you'll get a new disc and an authorisation to use the new reg within 2 weeks.

As says tho, you could get the new plates made and poss temp fix over the existing ones ( for the photo shoot that is !!)

you need to take the form to the DVLA office in sheffield, take your log book, mot, insurance etc

get show plate made u and stik them over- then you can put them on for real when paper work comes through!

I just swapped my plate from the Z to my wifes 1 series and took the form and docs for both cars into the local DVLA office. That was last Tuesday and I had a letter in the post on Thursday with the new MOTs and Tax discs saying change the plates so that's 2 days. That was a transfer from one car to another but I am sure when I put the plate on my Z they did it there and then like Half Colin said... key is to take everything in to your local DVLA office dont post it

A further tip is to get there before it opens at 9am and then you can get it sorted within 10 minutes. :wink:

These places get very busy.

Seconded I am lucky enough to work next to our local DVLA office so get there for 8:50ish and am always in the first couple to be served... back sat at my desk in 15mins tops nobody knows I am gone

The plates you buy on eBay (legal ones)... Most sellers don't ask for ID, apparently.

I was given the heads up on this tip on another BMW forum. Visited the Northampton office a month ago and got there at 8.45am and was still only third in line. The previous time I went I was there about an hour after getting there mid morning.

Do it by post, and expect it to take ages. Go to the DVLA office, stand in a queue for ages but leave ready to rock! It's not too bad, but when you come to change the car is when it's a pain. That's when you have to cough up something like £60 just to keep the plate you own...

Once I got my insurance details and documentation from the DVLA, I just nipped up to my local office and took literally 5 mins. If you want to shoot I would say just put the plate on for the shoot, remove it when your finished

Doesn't stop some scrote from putting them on then filling up with petrol though.

They would need exactly the same car, model and colour for any action to be taken against the registered plate owner since it would be recorded on the garage's CCTV. :wink:

Why?

The thief wouldn't worry about any of that, they get free petrol which was the point I was trying to make, doesn't matter if the plate relates to anything else.
