Private Reg - attract trouble ?

Mike - agree with you. Mis spaced and odd fonts is just a red flag to a bull. Hence I have a shortened plate, corrrect fonts and spacing and just initials with no year designation.

I had a private plate with dodgy lettering for about 5 years on my M3 and never had any trouble. I once had a policeman shout out of the window of his car to me at a roundabout to get the plates changed, but I was never officially pulled over about it.

Of course, it caused me an MOT failure, but the following years I remembered to swap them the night before for regular ones, and just put the dodgy ones back on the next day!

I'm currently waiting for the DVLA paperwork to put the same dodgy plate on my Z, so will wait and see if having the plate on an attention-attracting car will cause more trouble :?

As with all these things it's luck of the draw, area of the country, where you drive. In the Jeep Club pretty much every member has a J 33 Pxx registration. Most space it as J33P xx and often on a square plate. So popular that in fact now J33P is gone as is J88P and most J66P iirc

Some have driven on these for years without issue. One guy however was stopped changed it, had it checked, put it back on and then stopped again and fined heavily. He only lasted a month in total :(

In most cases I see no reason not to go with it and if stopped once, get legal.
I drive in an out of Birmingham and there are ANPR systems in use everywhere and indeed 1/2 mile from my house is a public weighbridge and they pull cars in there too, while checking truck weights and loads. I'd last less than a week.

Be like sixspeed and only run the rear plate! Halves the problem! :P

As a side note, you want to try being a biker!! I had the police pull me once (just being nosey to see if they could find something to pull me for!! They couldn't. We bikers get this type of harassment!!) and the guy pulled out a tape measure and proceeded to measure the letter size and the letter gaps of my number plate to see if they were legal!! How sad is that! And to make it even sadder, he had memorised the correct measurements!! What a geek! :?

Jeez...

I have always fancied AR09 LAW, but it does increase the w***er rating somewhat!!

Initials are ok.

As far as spacing is concerned I think it can look chavtastic...depends.

Best mock ups or abuses, I've seen were E10 NAS By sticking electrical tape on the bottom part of the E to make an F and squashing up the created FIONAS
and B17 NGV totally changed to become BLING V with the V on a separate line:

I've got S11URV on my wife's MX5. Guess what I've done with it..........to get it to read like SHURV . She's never been pulled but If I put it on my Z4 how long do you think I'd last before a pull?. Why don't they go & catch real criminals rather than criminalise those they CAN catch......... :fuelfire: :poke:
